IO.SYS language?

Comment:
in what sort of a f---ing language is the file IO.SYS (real-mode-kernel of several Platforms dos,9x...) written or compiled? Is it possible to DEBUG it? can you rip something out of it? like the bootup logo or something else? Has somebody a detailed tutor? perhaps just some Offset adresses...???

IO.sys and logo.sys are pictures that are used when booting up or shuting down computer. U can open those two sys files in MSPAINT.

Io.sys contains purely machine code and data. I don't think you'd find much useful information if you disassembled it.

The io in io.sys stands for input/output. It isn't a program that loads pictures or bootup splash screens. It is the first file DOS loads when booting up and is responsible for the input/output for floppy/hard drives.
The only hacking/debugging of io.sys I've ever heard of is to disable the version check that Microsoft annoyingly puts into their products. For example, you can debug io.sys so that Win3 will run under the DOS that comes with Win95/98. If you know what you're doing, you can even run Win3.x using FAT32 partitions by making changes in the io.sys of DOS that comes with Win9x.
Otherwise, I can't think of any reason for wanting to alter it.

Very much interesting in trimming the size (over 200K) of io.sys from Win98SE when creating a multipupose Ghost boot floppy. Anyone found a way to safely remote just the embedded Win98 splash screen graphic from the io.sys file?
