I have a 486DX2 66Mghz with 36 megs of ram.
I would like to install windows 98 using my Windows Se CD.At startup all appears fine. Drives A/B/C and D lights come on in proper sequence. D being the last one. Yet when I type D:\ at he dos prompt I get the message:
Invalid drive specification.
The following is what I see on my screen after the system has booted up.
CD-Rom Device Driver for IDE (Four Channels)
(C) Copyright AOpen Inc. 1994-1997
Driver Version :V500
Device Name : MSCD0001
Drive0: Port=1F0 (Primary Channel). Slave IRQ=14
Firmware Versin : U10I
Transfer mode : Programmed I/OC:\>C:DOS\SMARTDRV.exe /X
Bad command or file name
C:\>d:\
Invalid drive specification.My CONFIG.SYS File reads as follows:
LASTDRIVE=D
DEVICE=C:\DOS\SETVER.exe
DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS
DOS=HIGH
FILES=30
DEVICE=C:\CDROM\AOATAPI.SYS\AOATAPI.SYS /D:MSCD0001 /P:1F0,14 /QMy AUTOEXEC.BAT File reads as follows:
C:\DOS\SMARTDRV.exe /X
@ECHO OFF
PROMPT $p$g

If your autoexec.bat file is correct as written in your post, you need to add c:\dos\mscdex /D:MSCD0001 /P:1F0,14 /Q to your autoexec.bat file

ABOVE TEXT IS INCOMPLETE. OOOOPPS I HIT THE WRONG KEY DURING TYPING. I'LL ATTEMPT ANOTHER ENTRY. LOOK FOR INVALID DRIVE SPECIFICATION.

I'm too tired and am making too many mistakes to retype the whole thing all over again, so I'll just carry on from where I left off.
PROMPT$p$g
PATH C:\DOS
SET TEMP=C:\DOS
C:\DOS\MSCDEX.EXE\MSCDEX.exe /D:MSCD0001/L:DMy "Stand CMOS SETUP" has the following:
Date
Time
Daylight Savings timeDrive C: User
Drive D: None
Drive E: None
Drive F: None
If I enter into Drive D, my choices are: USER,NONE or any number from 1 to 46.If I choose USER I am then prompted to fill out CYLS,HEADS,PRECOMP,LANDZONE,SECTORS and MODE.Further down the screen it reads:
Drive A: 1.44M, 3.5in.
Drive B: 1.2M , 5.25in.Video : EGA/VGA
Halt On : All ErrorsWhat do I have to do to correct the " Invalid drive specification " message?

Hmm.. you can try changing last drive=D to F, reinstalling the cd drivers, download a boot disk from www.bootdisk.com and see if it will load your cdrom.
There is no need to set drive type in the bios for a cdrom.
I would change that line in the autoexec to just c:\dos\mscdex /d:xxxx

Right. Your line c:\dos\mscdex.exe\mscdex.exe /D:whatever is wrong. Sould not repeat. Also, did you try
using autoconfig in your BIOS ?
