Everything to get you on the right track is mentioned on the above site, alas poor X86 no longer responding to questions!
STANDALONE DOS IS AN OPERATING SYSTEM AND WILL LIVE ON FOR MANY YEARS, DESPITE THE DOOM MONGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

... ok, well,
A hardware modem (not a Winmodem) and Arachne is one way.
Let us be thankful for the fools. But for them the rest of us could not succeed.

Dear t_evl1,
If you're a DOS DialUp guy and you intend to
switch to High-Speed someday the UpGade path
below may be of interrest to you, expecially
if you own more than one machine. It's easy
to install a packet-driver compared with the
trouble of using PPP packet-driver emulators
but "BackUp Routers" take the burden out of
your hands. I suggest you read about these:_______D-Link______Di-804HV
U.S. Robotics______USR8000A
_______D-Link______Di-808HV
____MultiTech______RF550VPN
____MultiTech________RF102S
_______D-Link_____Di-824VUP
______NetGear_______FWG114P
____MultiTech______RF560VPN
______NetGear________FR328SThese routers are sorted in order of cost and
i've seen more expensive models where the Fax
and Terminal Emulator are available through a
3rd-party application such as `DialOut/IP'.Essentially, the MoDem (usually external), is
under the exclusive control of the router and
connection protocols (PPP, PPPoE, etc.) will
be handled from there, which should simplify
the DOS user's chore of configuring... I've
seen models with TelNet management but i have
not been able to determine if it suffices to
support manual Dialing. If AOL access & Fax
are a concern you need to double your budget
and the AOL-compatible ones are quite rare...If you chose to buy with Wi-Fi in mind beware
that older models often lack WAP security.
