Comment:

I recently downloaded the 21 disk set of Windows '95. i have been trying to install it on a old pc which had Win for workgroups on v3.11
I have installed MS-DOS 6.22 but cannot run the first disk for Win '95
Have tried SETUP but this brings me back to the MS-DOS set up screen.

The file on DISK 1 consists of ONE compressed file called DISK_1 (DIR) The command EXPAND a:/DISK_1 keeps saying it cannot open the input file : disk_1

What can i do to run this programme? ANYONE HELP?!!!

Reply:

type rename c:\autoexec.bat autoexec.bak

that will re-name your automatic execution batch file.

Reset the computer and try again

When you type SETUP at the command prompt, DOS will look in the current directory for the file setup.com, setup.exe, setup.bat (not sure of the order). If it doesn't find it there, it searches what is called the DOS Path statement in the same order. If you are at your A: drive (which you didn't state) and type SETUP and Dos setup comes up instead, that means it didn't find the program on the A: drive.
You said Disk_1 only had 1 file on it, which is a compacted file - that doesn't sound right. There should be a setup, com or something there.

There is only ONE folder on disk_1 when i open it there are 18 files in it, amongst others are SETUP.exe and PRECOPY01

Ive managed to open the folder on a different pc and resave the files individually,
which now works til i get to DISK_3 then i had to abort the set-up as it didnt recognise that it was disk_3 and said that it could not find the SETUP.CAB on the disk.

Once again i opened the disk on here and found 2 files: PRECOPY3.CAB and WIN95_03.CAB
SETUP.CAB was not listed in either folder.

I thought it was obvious i was using the A:/ drive with trying to install Win95 from floppy.
DO you know why its asking for the setup.cab which isnt on DISK_3?

Well for starters, you are asking a "Windows 95" question in the "DOS" forum. Why would you expect people who use DOS and nothing but DOS to answer this?

Second, you are trying to pirate licensed software.

Third, since we have no way of knowing who created this "disc download" and how they did it and from what source, it's pretty hard to imagine what may be on these alleged discs, eh?

1. You can run win95 setup from windows 3.11; Open File manager>Click A drive>click Disk_1 folder>double click setup.exe

2. If you want to run setup from dos; At A prompt type Disk_1\setup

3. If above not work, copy all disk to your hard disk and run setup from hard disk
eg. C:\copy a:\disk_1 C:\ for disk 1
c:\copy a:\precopy2.cab C:\ for disk 2
C:\copy a:\precopy3.cab c:\ for disk 3
C:\copy a:\win95_04.cab c:\ for disk 4
c:\copy a:\win95_05.cab C:\ for disk 5 and so on....

to ru setup at C:\ just type setup and

You also can copy win95 diskette to c:\temp directory and run setup from temp dir

note.. If setup hang during installation go to BIOS setup, under Advanced CMOS setup DISABLE Boot sector Virus Protection

Why not read your other post on the same subject?

http://www.computing.net/dos/wwwboard/forum/7873.html

When you are told your problem is trying to set up on a low end PC and how to extract files correctly.

Some answers dated earler than the ones here.

What do you want a differant answer?

DO YOU HAVE TO BE SO SARCASTIC "NAME"? I GOT ALL THE HELP I NEEDED FROM THE SUPPORTIVE PEOPLE ON HERE. THE PROBLEM WAS SOLVED AND NO FURTHER QUESTIONS WHERE ASKED IN THE OTHER POST. TO CROSS EXAMINE MY QUESTIONS IS SOMEWHAT DISTURBING.
I DID HOWEVER MANAGE TO RUN WINDOWS 95 ON A "LOW END" PC EVENTUALLY. IT HAD BEEN MODIFIED.
