I have a harddrive on a CNC machine that has just died. The system had MS-DOS 6.22 running on it. I am going to try and find a replacement hard drive to install; however, I am a little unsure of how to re-install DOS. All I have is a boot disk that contains MS-DOS 6.22 for embedded systems, will this work for the installation purposes? I am not sure I can use this for an installation of DOS or not. What do I need to do to get MS-DOS installed onto a hard drive?

I'm not familar with MS-DOS for embedded systems, but I'd bet it won't work if all you have is one disk. MS-DOS 6.22 came on several. One thing you may want to try is FreeDOS which is a free version of DOS. You can download it right off that site and it should be compatible with the software you're running.
Either one you just boot off the floppy and follow the prompts.

Other versions of DOS are available see:

DRDOS 7.01 7.02 7.03 are free for personal use, whilst FREEDOS is entirely free, the other versions are licensed............

Have DOS 5 loaded onto the computer of our CNC. You do not need the whole version of DOS loaded up. Basically you may need what used to come on an old Boot disk. Our hard drive is rather small at One meg, and cannot fit all of DOS plus the CNC commands.
Simple to make. Just go to a working computer with a fresh disk. Give it a SYS /A: command and it ought to load up the basics. Then boot up the CNC computer using this disk, and see if you can then transferr the COMMAND.COM to it. Again you may need to issue a sys /C: to get it there. After that it is up to you to get the remaining CNC command structure on board.
Other option is to remove the hard drive from the CNC computer, and install it into another computer as a D drive and got from there transferring the goodies.
Wm.
