installing DOS

i have an old computer (486) and i need to install dos on it i formated hdd (maxtor 540 mb) using windows 98 bootdisk, and the ran the setup.exe from dos disk 1. when i restart mine computer it reads the diks then it doesnt do anything yeah these are not original dos disks :/ but i need the dos on that comp and i couldnt find anyone to get it from so i downloaded it :/ any ideas why does it happens?

did you format your harddrive using fat32??
in that case dos won't recognise the disk. you should use fdisk from the win98 bootdisk and remove the fat32 partition, reboot, disable large harddrive support and recreate a primary partition. format it and it should be fat16 and readable (read installable) by dos.

Try with this OS. Do not use FAT 32 with 16 bits OS.
