If you have the original DOS install floppies, boot to the first floppy, start the install process and follow the prompts. Then once DOS is installed on the hard drive, boot the system, insert Windows 3.1 install floppy disk one, start it's install process and follow the prompts.

I have the same problem. How can I find the original DOS install copies on the web? (previous version of DOS6)
When I installed Window 3.1. It says that the DOS version is not compatible with Win 3.1.
Infact I have formated my PC which has Win.XP on it, and the only way I know to reinstall it is the following pathway: DOS5 > win3.1 > DOS6 > Win.XP
I have tried to intal DOS6 and then win.XP or 98 but every time it gave fatal error within sepup.

Well, The windows XP CDROM is a bootable disc, so you can just set your CD drive as the primary bootable device in your BIOS, and you will be able to start directly into the Windows XP setup off of the CD. If you do not have a bootable CDROM of WXP, you can download the bootdiak set from Microsoft and install it by booting with the start up disks. For a free DOS version, go to The FreeDOS Website. This distribution is GNU GPL, so yuou can even redistribute it if you like.
