Hi,

Yes, it can be done.

Where are we ging with this?

Are you trying to make your primary HD 6.22 bootable?

You may have problems here.

A) MS-DOS 6.22 Setup needs to be run fom a bootable device to correctly install (SYS) the system files.

B) Diskette install version keeps asking for DISK 2 to continue - It looks for the Disk Labal! Even if you copy all the files into 1 directory...

Hi Mick C,

Yes.

The reasons I asked what I did were that:

1 If the HD with 6.22 is bootable, he can boot that and make his own boot disk.

2 Most of the DOS externals, nobody ever uses.

3 If he's running w98 like he says, and he manages to 'install' DOS 6.22 on that drive, his w98 will be toast.

Sure - we see plenty of posts where users want to 'add' DOS622 to a 98 or even XP system, who have no clue what that actually entails.

- Eh - I wouldn't go so far as to say 'nobody ever uses' the externals - setup unpacks those, configures the Dosshell video drivers and creates autoexec & config.

Among the 'unused' executables:

setver, dosshell, xcopy, attrib, defrag, memmaker, interlnk, edit, smartdrv, deltree..... (maybe a few more?)

Hi,

I'm giving 5 to 1 odds that somebody who doesn't know how to make a boot disk has little use for interlnk, intersvr, join, subst, debug...

As for DOS 6.22 defrag on a, let's say, 40GB partition. Shakey.

Why bang on about 40GB hard drives 2 gb hard drives are sufficient for DOS, but do agree that the minimilistic approach to DOS like taken by FreeDOS is sufficient for most users.

Not many of us would have a use for join or even debug, but I think that most of the others mentioned are bordering on necessities.

Sure, you can 'get by' on the internal commands - depends on what the end goal is I suppose (I'd be lost without Dosshell, edit or ansi.sys)

I found a utility to create a debug script. Works great.

MS-DOS 6.22 will only boot under normal circumstances from a Bootable Floppy Diskette or a Primary C:\ Partition. That is unless you use some form of boot manager.

I see no point in installing MS-DOS 6.22 onto a Windows 98/98se computer in the first place since the WinDOS 7.10 (aka MS-DOS 7.10) will do almost anything 6.22 will do and more. To run Windows 3.1 (with a few limitations) its needs a little help with 3XSTART but apart from that it is a usable DOS version. Look at Wengiers MS-DOS 7.10 page to see that (MS-DOS 7.10 is nothing more than a hacked version of WinDOS 7.10 from 98se) since M$ have not released any new version after 6.22 to the general public.

If you are installing 6.22 to a 2GB Drive which is the maximum size it will work with by the way. What differance is the 2 to 4 MBs C:\DOS Directory anyway?

However - This is my essential utility list:

FDISK - To prepare drive (Then not needed)
FORMAT, SYS & LABEL to produce diskettes
EDIT to prepare Autoexec & Config files
DOSHELP & QBASIC which is needed to run it
EMM386 & HIMEM for Memory Management
COUNTRY & KEYB (IF outside the USA)
MSCDEX for CD-ROM Support
DOSSHELL as a basic user interface
(DOSSHELL is not supplied with MS-DOS 6.2x)
(But can be found on the Supplimental Disk)

I am sure many poeple would like to ADD or DELETE items from the list. One of the first things I did when I obtained MS-DOS 6.22 was to fully install it onto a harddrive then copied all the expanded utilitys onto 5 Diskettes ranging from usefull on Disk 1 to Useless on Disk 5 so that I always had access to them when needed.
(Today these live on a CD/R with all versions of Windows 3x expanded)

Sure - if the person is just using DOS as a stepping stone to Win3x then they may not need (or even be aware of) the external commands - which is too bad, and pretty limiting too.

Ah well

Mechanix - that's good. I hadn't forgotten, it's been in the back of my mind - just been distracted by some recent hardware acquisitions

The reason I asked the originator what he was trying to do is so he wouldn't hose up a usable 9x drive.

I see no reply.

Hopefully he's read all this and learned something.

Yeah - I don't know why, but the old DOS/Win31 forums seem to be blessed with an abundance of these 'one post wonders' who ask a question and yet don't seem to be able to bring themselves to acknowledge the responses - or worse (to my mind), go on to post more questions.

Maybe the practice is just more noticeable here then say in the Win9x or the very busy XP forums.

Justin has even been kind enough to suggest it in the 'Terms and Rules' section - - but we know how widely read those are ; )

(not to mention Mick's sig)

Hi jboy,

I guess Justin is the sysop?

I tried to follow a link to another user (and to myself) and got this:

You must be coming from Computing.Net to use this feature.

If you feel you are getting this message in error, please check to ensure your firewall software is not interfering with communications between your browser and this site.

Any solutions?

Hi - yeah, Justin Weber is the owner/webmaster of computing.net

I've encountered that as well - not sure if it's a cookie issue, but sometimes (always?) if you spawn different windows to access the site, you're not recognized as being logged in.
Was never sure if this was an Opera 'recognition' problem or not. I guess not.

Maybe try pasting the URL in from your current (logged in) window.

Hi jboy,

You're right. Some pages don't like a spawn.

The paste didn't work either.

My cookies work with ebay yahoo my bank etc, so I guess that's not it.

Hmm, I don't know then.

Kind of roundabout, but if it's a post, you could use the # in 'message find' - that should maintain your logged in status
