I have a copy of DOS 6.22,, I put disk 1 in the floppy and I got a response of, "Non-System Disk or Disk Error" The disk is fine, it works on my computer. Also I have WIN-98 CD and It doesn't recognize the CD-ROM, (because I think theres no DOS) How do I install DOS 6.22 without DOS? Can anyone share your wisdom on this subject?? Please HELP!! Thanks

Reply: (edit)Right on, THanks for the help... I got though my previous problems and ran into some new problems, that I figured out. I figured out I had a bad flopy disk, so I coppied DOS 6.22 onto a good floppy and sucessfully installed it on my my bro's computer. Started the system with CD rom Support and ran the win89 setup from the CD. Scandisk found bad sectors on the HD and fixed them, and now It's finally installing WIN98. Estimated time remaning 301 Min... Real Slow!

Reply: (edit)Ok, now I have a new problem and I don't know if this one can be fixed. Win98 finally after 3 1/2 hours of installing, finally got done. I restarted the computer and nothing happens after it detects the mouse, keyboard, HD, and FD. It just sits there. I left it alone for 1/2 hour and nothing happened. I poped in the win98 startup disk and got to a dos prompt "A:\" C drive has win 98 files and folders on it. I typed in "win" and I get Bad Command or file name Durring scan disk it found 2 blocks of dammaged disk surface and I chose it to be fixed. Maybe that might be it, I don't know. I told my Bro to buy a new HD, there cheep. 20 GIG for $65.00. But in the mean time, does anyone have any ideas that might help this poor 100Mhz system boot? Thanks

Reply: (edit)I don't understand, I just DONT. Why are we screwing around installing "dos 6.22" when it looks like windoz98 is REALLY what you are installing? Why are you even SCREWING with dos in the first place? I'm certainly no expert, but I have installed and reinstalled, and formatted, and fdisk'd and a few other things, I've installed various brands of Linux/Unix/Xenix, MS-DOS 3x-6.22, Windoz 95, 98, and NEVER in ANY of those cases, did I feel the need to screw around installing "DOS 6.22" BEFORE I went ahead and installed whatever system I REALLY wanted to use. If you are installing Widoz 95 or 98, then INSTALL it. Don't screw around with other things--it is a complete waste of time. Sorta like, maybe, what? Maybe, putting a 235 Chivvy in when you really wanted a 427, or, maybe, uh, putting, say, uh, green paint on the house when you really wanted white, or, uh, ahhhh, um, . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ... . . .. hmmmmm.

Reply: (edit)Well, I think I see what we're doing here. First, how new/big/fast is the "victim" machine? Have you gotten into the bios settings, and see if you can set the CDROM to be bootable? Your CD may just boot then. If not, you will need a BOOTABLE floppy which has the CD drivers on it that will recognize the CD of the machine. Don't you have one with your Windoz98CD? Go to www.bootdisk.com and look around there. I'll be you will find one that will work. Try making a "startup disk" from another machine--see if it puts the dos mode CD driver on the floppy. I haven't even figured this one out yet, I swear one of my PC's does, and the other does not. I think most systems with 98 will put the dos mode CD driver on ther, and most 95 will not. One of my 98 systems is my thinkpad, and it does NOT make a startup disc with dos mode Cd drivers on it. Did I mention, go to www.bootdisk.com? Did I mention that? Well, what are you waiting for? I'll bet you'll find what you need there.

Reply: (edit)A format or a Fdisk does not wipe the master boot record. With your boot disk in A: start up and when you get to a clean A: prompt fdisk /mbr this will wipe the master boot record. You can then reboot and it will rebuild the master boot record and should build it with the w98 found. If not it might need a reinstall. Another thing would be when you format to use the /s parameter which will format the HDD as bootable. (format C:/S)

Reply: (edit)Ok are you ready for this one. i just got a new pc and decided to format my old one and give it to my parents, so the format was ok but then i decided to be extra brave and go into FDisk, not a good idea for me. I erased the partion that was there and i think i deleted dos so now i dont get any C:\ prompt or any other promt for that matter when i just start the pc. But my start up disk for win me still works so when i go to start up with CD rom support it searches but is unable to find the E:\ drive so i cant run from Cd. Also i get an error message saying unable to scandisc as not enough (REM) and all i know about (REM) is they are a wicked band. I have plenty of (RAM) in the pc and a small 2.5g HDD P200MMX but i have never heard of this (REM) can anyone give me any advice as it seems a shame to have a half decent pc sitting around coz ma mam was just gonna use it to go on the net and word process. any advice welcome and feel free to email me anything that can help me with this... Thanxxx rob.kean@orange.net

Reply: (edit)Try to make your hard drive bootable and see if that helps. To do that, insert a bootable disk and you should get to a C:\ prompt. Make sure on that bootable disk you have command.com, msdos.sys, and io.sys files, they're the only three you need to get to a c prompt; don't worry about autoexec.bat and config.sys yet. You can create a bootable disk by inserting a floppy into a functional computer and issuing the dos command sys a: or by typing format a: /s to format a floppy with the system files. In windows, you right click on the 3.5 floppy icon in My computer, left click format click in the copy system files only and then click start or OK. Take your disk back over to the formatted machine and see if you can get to a c prompt or an a prompt. If you do, try typing sys c: which should put the system files onto the hard drive. Then you will be able to boot the machine without a boot disk. If you are trying to install windows 98 or later you can just boot from a windows startup disk and select the first option to enable cd-rom support. From there your cd should be functional and you should be able to install windows. If not, create an autoexec.bat with the line deviceload=mscdex.exe Usually that will allow access to your cd when in dos mode. Remember if you need to reformat in the future you should format the hard drive with the system files by using the /s switch. It makes things a lot easier. Charles
