Hello, I am going to install DOS 5.0 on a modern machine. I have 3.0GB of unpartitioned space(many OSes to choose from :)), and I'm wondering how to partition it. I have used SPFDISK and created a 900MB FAT16 Partition(HEX CODE: 04 - FAT16 <32M).When I boot the disk it asks to format the partition, and i let it do it. My BIOS warns me that the boot sector is being modified. I then press 'Y'. Then the setup says "There was an error formating the main partition. Press F3 to exit and correct the problem"
MS-DOS looks to install on the C: Drive and within certain parameters unless you are using a 3rd Party Boot Manager. If you install MS-DOS first prior to any other O/S it creates less problems, and is what M$ recommends:
Not only the partition must be of the right size, but it should be located under the 1024 cylinder limit. That is why it is recommended that DOS be installed first. Some boot managers and emulaters may get around these problems.
