I have a computer that went to bed happy last night and got up with a very small Device Manager. No sound, no video, etc etc. It did say though that BIOS.VXD was unable to load. My BIOS had returned to its default settings also. I have an entire list of Win98 printed out and knew that BASE5.CAB contained the bios.vxd, only problem is, I don't know how to add it from the A: prompt. Would someone out there help me with this please ? Thank You much. Paul

The extract.exe prog in windows or windows\command will list out the Cab extraction swithches to use if you run it at a dos prompt as ' extract /? '.
Do you have the base5.cab on your hard drive or accessable CDrom ? If so you will have to direct extract to the win9x folder, then use extract to send a copy of bios vxd to C:\windows\system

I have it on a CD-ROM. The big problem that I saw was the fact that my CD-ROM drive was not listed and unaccessable. I don't know how I could have done it even from the A: prompt. My Device Manager had but a few entries. I finally reinstalled Win98 buy I just wish that I had the knowledge of how to solve that problem with the reinstall. Im sure you guys would have done a lot better job of it. Many thank, appreciate it. Paul

Did you make a start up disk with this install ? If not, go to control panel, add/remove programs, pick the startup disk tab and make one now for the next time windows refuses to boot. It has CDrom support on it, so you'll be able to get there to extract or reinstall etc.
Boot the machine one time with it so you know what to expect if you HAVE to use it. Read through the info presented about the tools one the boot disk.
Better still is to copy the win98 folder from your CD to the hard drive , unless you're real short of space, then you have access to the files from a dos prompt on C:\ or A:\ ,and no fuss about getting the CDrom to run the disk.

Obtain a Windows 98 bootdisk from www.bootdisk.com

This will enable you to start your PC with CD-ROM Support.

Use the command EXTRACT /? from your CD Drive to find out the command to use.
