Comment: I have a problem when installing a cd-rom driver on my thinkpad 760el. I have made it through most of the steps 1. Start DOS. 2. Insert the CD-ROM Driver diskette into the diskette drive. 3. Type A:UINSTALL and press enter. 4. Select "Install IBM ThinkPad CD-ROM Driver for DOS/Windows at the Installation Option Screen. After this it says Target Path....( C:\CDROM\ after hitting enter an ERROR message appears: An error occured while accessing drive C. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Reply: (edit)How are you starting in DOS ? Is it from a boot disk - or - can you boot to C:\ normally ? Do you have any OS on the laptop ? And lastly, has the hard drive been partitioned and formatted correctly ? The error may indicate that the hard drive is not yet formatted for use. Krystyna

Reply: (edit)I boot up at the C:\. I am trying to install my CD-Rom driver so that I may put on my OS. I am not sure if the hard drive has been partitioned and formatted correctly. How do I do this? I tried using a Win98 bootdisk last night(this system previously had Win98 on it; the graphics still come up but boots to C:/) the problem with that was that it was looking for a cd0rom.

Reply: (edit) You say you get C:\> when you boot? Do a DIR on C:. Is there a \CDROM directroy on c:? If there is enter CD \CDROM and then enter DIR. Is there a SYS file there (name such as IBMCD.SYS)? That is your CD-ROM driver if there is. Your problem is not clear. It could be CD-ROM not hooked up completely or no driver in the CONFIG.SYS for the CD-ROM. However your error message sounds like it might be a hard drive problem of some kind. You Can DIR drive C:? Your easiest first approach would be to get hold of a Windows 98 startup disk and try to boot with it selecting to start with CD-ROM support. What kind of error message does it give you if it will not boot? (The C: drive is not involved in this so it is either lack of the correct driver on the startup disk or the CD-ROM itself is not being detected.) If there is a .SYS file in the \CDROM directory add that driver to the same section as OAKCDROM.SYS in in the config.sys on the startup disk. If it won't boot now, there must be something wrong with the CD-ROM or the cabling.

Reply: (edit)Can your laptop use the floppy drive and cdrom drive at the same time - or - is there room for only one at a time. 1. If you can use both together, then go to www.bootdisk.com and download a new bootdisk with CDROM support for Win 98 or Win 98SE Boot with the floppy and choose to start with CDROM support and then run setup from E:\ drive ( this will be your CDROM ) 2. If you can use only floppy or cdrom one at a time, then you need to put CDROM drivers on the hard drive as you are trying to do. Maybe your installation disk is dodgy. 3. What is the name of the IBM CDROM driver on the diskette. eg IBMCD.SYS - the name will end in SYS To find this out, put the installation disk into floppy bay and change to A:\ prompt then type DIR and check post back with the names of the files. Reply: (edit)Okay Cyn - it might be easier to put the files on yourself and forget about using the UINSTALL.EXE You have to be able to use EDIT from DOS or Notepad from Windows You need to make two files Run EDIT or Notepad and type in C:\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD001 and then save that file as AUTOEXEC.BAT and put it onto that floppy disk Then make another file Type in DEVICE=c:\IBMTPCD.SYS /D:MSCD001 and save this file as CONFIG.SYS and put it on the floppy Next you need to copy these 4 files to the hard drive. 1. MSCDEX.EXE 2. IBMTPCD.SYS 3. AUTOEXEC.BAT ( your new file ) 4. CONFIG.SYS ( your new file ) Do the copying by changing to A:\ prompt and typing COPY MSCDEX.EXE C: /V etc If you can put the files on the hard drive, you should then have CDROM access in DOS when you next boot with the CDROM pack in. Best of luck...Krystyna

Reply: (edit)Cyn, sounds like you are making progress. I would, however, CERTAINLY do some research and testing and make a bootable disc that will read the cdrom. You should be able to do it if the C drive reads the cdrom, by making a bootable disc, and then just copying everything off the c drive to a. This assumes you just have the basics on the c drive, the bootable files, and the cdrom drivers. I KNOW, that somehow, someway, I got the install disc to install TO a floppy. Seems like you have to pull and reinsert both floppys through the process. I don't remember, maybe I copied the install files to C: and installed TO the floppy drive from there. All I know is, I did create a bootable floppy for my thinkpad.
