Comment:

I Want to install DOS 5.0 from a cd, I have the two images files of DOS 5.0, I've tryed to make a bootable cd with it, but alwasy tel me the same thing when I run the setup.exe : " Insert the MS-DOS version 5.0 Disk ! in drive A: and press CTRL+ALT+DEL".

Can I change the setup.ini to change this ?

Or is it anyway that I can install DOS 5.0 on my Laptop (I don't have a floppy drive on it.)

Usually on a setup floppy [I know you don't have a floppy drive; stick with me.] there's a file called "DISK.ID" or similar. You might get by with creating such a file on your CD.

BUT, if it asks for the second disk during install, you're probably dead in the water.

Since this machine is a 3G, presumably it's new enough to have a user pluggable HD. If so, things will get a whole lot easier if you put the HD in a box with floppy drive and install there.

If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.

I never paid attention with 5.0 but with 6.22 the installation will check for a floppy disk label. If that's not correct you'd get that message.

If that's the reason you're getting the message I don't think you'll be able to install it from cd.

Installing DOS 5.0 and/or 6.22 from CD is a well known problem that has no solution till today as far as I know due to the label checking procedure performed by the setup of DOS.

I'm working on that issue and I have figured out a procedure to work around the problem, but I'm still far to have a viable solution.

It shouldn't be a major problem. You'd just need to bypass the 'setup' command which starts the installation. The easiest way would probaby be to create a batch file to sys the drive, create a dos directory and then use the expand command to extract the compressed files and copy everything to the dos directory.

You are right DAVEINCAPS, but my target is more ambitious than simply to setup a DOS environment.

I want to store the images of the native (or near-native) installation diskettes on a bootable CD and then start the installation of the selected operating system. So you can restore at your choice the original floppies to perform a classic setup.

To have the native structure protected is an upper level than to access manipulated files. But that is for software lovers only!

Now I'm working on DOS 3.30, 5.0, 6.22 and Windows 3.10 when I have lazy time and I'm in the good mood. So the target is far, far away...

DOS 5.0 does not have support for CD drives
