Subject: Inherited MachineOS: Dos/Win95CPU/Ram: Pentium mmx 233 / 32mb raModel/Manufacturer: unknown |
Comment: A relative recently gave me an old computer from her office that had been sitting in storage (Pentium MMX 233mhz with 32mb ram, 3gb hd, ATI RAGE 64 video card, win95 release 2). I want to turn it into a DOS 6.x machine but I have a few questions before I wipe the hd… Do I have to partition the hard drive a certain way before wiping windows and installing DOS? Or will DOS be ok with the 3gb hd? If in fact dos does have a problem with the big HD, will I be able to re-partition it after I wipe windows using dos's fdisk? Will the video card work with my old games / applications? Do I need to find some drivers somewhere? Thanks in advance

Reply: (edit)MS-DOS 6.xx only supports FAT16, therefore the biggest partition is 2GB, but FDISK will allow you to partition the whole 3GB into two or more partitions. MS-DOS does not have graphics driver par-se, but there is software which allows MS-DOS to take advantage of the capabilities of several graphics card, the ATI Rage series being well supported thru the Scitech UNIVBE67 package, see: http://www.scitechsoft.com/ftp/sdd/

Reply: (edit)Why fiddle with it. You can boot to dos everytime. I know it was a long time ago but there is a full dos underneath the Win95. I am pretty sure you tell it to reboot to dos and then if you need the space then just delete the windows files. Better check on that but if you are going to wipe it anyway. I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you goober.
