Subject: IBM PC doesn't like DOS 6.22 |
Comment: I recently wiped the HD of my IBM PS/2 486SLC2 and installed MS DOS 6.22 over the previous OS, which was IBM PC DOS 5.00. I now find that DOS programs have alot of difficulty running on this IBM machine. Even running DOS 6.22's own MSD.EXE utility causes the HD to freeze. All other programs result in either nothing at all, an HD freeze or a run-time error. Either there is some kind of hardware problem, or this machine was only meant to handle PC DOS. If this is the case, I would appreciate it if anyone in this forum could e-mail me IBM PC DOS 5.00. Thanks.

Reply: (edit)I would be surprised if DOS 6.22 is the problem. I have a PS/2 386 with DOS 6.22 and Windows 3.1. It doesn't have any trouble with MSD or any other DOS programs. Did you wipe out the hard drive by formatting it or deleting all the files?

Reply: (edit)Hi Victor As Winston Explained I would be surprised if the problem was the version of dos on the machine. I have used installed and scraped a number of IBM PS2 Pc and to my knoweldge none have had a problem with the version you are installing. Try the following 1 - from the boot disk use fdisk to delete all the patitions on the PC 2 - Use fdisk to make a single partition 3 - Use format c:/s to maked the HDD ok 4 - Boot the system up and use some of the commands in dos to test the pc You may wish to load dos based games or application to test the pc with. Good Luck
Regards Richard

Reply: (edit)I dont think it is dos either. I have an old ps/1 that originally came with IBM DOS. I just recently formatted the hard drive & installed dos 6.22 & have had no problems.

Reply: (edit)Regarding Winston's question, I formatted the drive, rather than deleted all files. I will make an attempt at Richard's FDISK suggestion. I did not think it was software problem either, since Microsoft created PC DOS as well as MS DOS. We'll see. Victor
