A little while ago i bought a game called falcon 3.0 and another called darksun2
My problem is is that falcon 3 dosent work at all, the manual says that i need to make more conventional memory and that i need 1024k of it to have sound! is there a limit on how much that ou can have? i went all around the net to find out what i can. with darksun2 i just dont have enough... it didn't come with a legitimate manual. i need help badly.

You can not have that much conventional memory, anything above 640k is upper or high memory. You can optimize what memory you have but you will never get 1040 of conventional.

If you are using dos 6.xx you can reboot to a dos prompt and type MEMMAKER and press enter...that will load some of your things like cd rom and such into upper memory which will free up some of you conventional memory....

Hi,

Mike is absolutely right about 640K upper limit for conventional memory. Read manual more carefully. I think they mean some other sort of memory - XMS or EMS.

Good luck, Igor M

Hi,

To get EMS memory you need to install EMM386 driver in Config.sys file. If you already have EMM386 installed in Config.sys with NOEMS switch just replace NOEMS with RAM. In general you need the next lines in Config.sys to activate XMS, EMS and UMB.

DOS=HIGH,UMB
DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.exe RAM M3

assuming you have your DOS files in C:\DOS directory.

As for the 640K limit - it's just the way of counting. 1K=1024 bytes. So 640K=640x1024=655360 bytes.

Good luck, Igor M

I'm not sure about that, but some third party memory managers (QEMM for example) can use part of video memory just over 640K zone and attach it to main 640K. But in my practice these managers cause more problems then they fix. If you use some third party memory manager try to use standard EMM386.exe instead.

my computer had the same problem untill i bought darksun 1. it told me all i needed to do was to creat a bootable disk and it should run just fine. i followed the derecrtions and it worked, the great thing is when i down loaded darksun 2 it had more than the nessasary amount of conventional memory left.

I am trying to increase my EMS memory. My Config.sys says:

DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.exe RAM
DOS=HIGH,UMB
DEVICEHIGH=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\CPQIDECD.SYS /D:IDECD001
FILESHIGH=80
BUFFERSHIGH=40,4
FCBSHIGH=10
SWITCHES=/F

I tried some of the suggestions mentioned above but it did not work. What should I do now?
