Hello,
I enjoyed all the pages. I have read most of them. You all seem so helpful. I just hope you can help me. I Messed Up Big Time!! I have been up literally 2 days workin on this. I know nothing about MSDos except the bare mimim. I stayed up `all night looking at web sites to learn what I could. I will really need alot of help with those Dos Commands. I can't get into windows or my desk top. So everything will have to be done Through MSdos. I am trying to re-install WIN 98 but when it gets just through the 1st few steps then I get "Undefined Dynalink". Until I get this resolved I can't even use my computer. I made the mistake of replacing all my .VXD and other Driver files through MSDos because I couldnt get to Windows Desktop and it said I was missing several of those file drivers. So I just put im my boot disk and WIN 98 Disk and Extracted all the VXD files overwriting those I still had, I had no idea how many there were. And I am still missing 1 the VMM.VXD. I need to know how I can delete all those VXD Files from the Windows, and System32 folders to free up space. When I boot My Comp (I can't even get on WIN in safe mode),As soon as I get past the windows start up`screen All the VXD files show up on a black screen telling me that some are in System.ini and in Registry, and that I need to reinstall or uninstall the programs and software that they are for. It goes down the list 1 by 1 and then shuts down. I know I have to reinstall Mouse, CD Rom Sound Blaster, not sure what else. Now with this Dynalink Error thing I can't install WIN98 thru MSDos or any otherway. I was hoping if I did the re-install it would atleast get me on Windows so I can work on the other problem. I can't use my CD Rom unless its with the WIN 98 Boot Disk and WIN98 CD. My Reformat and Product recovery CDs will not work in the CD Rom and for some reason the boot disk that came with my software won't work. The Windows Boot Disk has Drivers on it for my CD Rom Drive, thats the only reason it works. Oh and another Stupid thing I did was I Put the Driver Files in the Windows,Win System and Win Sys32 folders because wasn't sure where they belonged. I thought I was covering all my bases.I now know.Am lo on space the Boot Disk Couldn't Even Load System tools which it had been before that.that. Everything I do will have to be done thru MSDos and this is not something I am really familliar with so Please send me detailed Info on how to type the MSDos Commands. Some I have tried from other pages just don't work. I am pretty Computer Literate but I do web pages and I paint. So i have not spent much time in Dos, but its actually pretty kewl. If I can learn the Lingo. Oh, I am also missing Config.sys and Autoexec.bat they are there when I bring up DIR. but it says they weren't found. I am probably missing even more files. I had almost half my Gigs left and i read in something I managed to open last night that i was low on mwemory then today the tools didn't load. I am running a IBM Aptiva, 233 Mghz,3 gigs, and 32 ram.`Any Help or Advice you can give me will be very much appreciated! Sorry this is so long but I noticed that you all liked all the information you could get so you can help.
Thanks So Much Ya'll!!

Well it might not be the answer you're looking for, but I recommend that you back up anything that you don't want to lose in dos and reformat the drive followed by reinstalling windows.
You can download pkzip ver 2.5 for dos at www.pkware.com it will make disk spanning easier for any files you don't want to lose. However, this won't reinstall programs that are windows based, so you would need the media, or execuable installer that those programs came on.
Afterward reformat the drive by typing format c: /s at the command prompt. You can run format from either c:\windows\command, or the win98 bootdisk. Next, use the win98 bootdisk to setup the cdrom drive, and finally run setup from the win98 cd.

Dumbo ! - Aptivas all came with a recovery/restore disk.
Aptivas are fill of proprietal IBM specified hardware with exclusive IBM drivers.
but then - phuk nose

Ronin,
Thanks for your help. I have graphic designs and Several Graphic design programs on my comp under Program Files. Can I move them all to MSDos. Like could I move my whole Program Files Folder to Dos? If so I need a command line to do it with I have no clue what to type to move anything. I can Extract, Read, and bring up the Directory. I have some files backed up but not my most recent work. Its because most of it is too big for the Floppys. I can't afford a zip drive or a CD burner. Also I thought if I could remove those extra files (Drivers) there were hundreds. I put in the 3 directories. I mean Hundreds in each one it went through 69 Cab zip files. I wasn't sure which files esxtentions went where just knew I need them. I figured I could put them in WINdows, WINdows SYStem, and Windows System32 so I would have the missing files and one of them was bound to be the right place...lol.I figured once I re-installed WIN 98 I woild go in and delete the ones that don't belong I now kmow which folder each flie ext goes in like VXD, DLL etc...I think I got way to many if ya ask me. I did it as a Wild card so I got every Driver with all different extentions Thats alot of sapce righjt there. But I dunno how to delete the Files through MSDos or how to move files to MSDos. I want to try to save all I can. I also have a D:/Drive. Not sure whats on it I only save stuff to C:/Drive, maybe I could move the Programs with EXE extentions there. If Dos can't save them for me. I feel so stupid this all hppened cuz I D/L IE 5 thought with a newer faster browser i would be able to make my pages a bit faster with uploading files and such. I think I will stick with IE4. I feel like an idiot. The day this happened I was working on a web page that was suppse to be done by Friday Night. Oh I also need thatr VMM.VXD File and I have searced and its not on my 98 Disk because it never extracted that I saw. I also need to have help with my Config.sys and Autoexec.bat, They showed in DIR but saaid they were not there. Maybe if I can get the Driver Files out of there so there will be room on the drive and no conflict. I read that the error I got when I tried to install WIN98 is often caused by same drivers on same system. The Error was Application Error Call To Undefined Dynalink. Well here I am tellin a story again its just that I read all the comments by those who help that they want to know everything because then they can better help you. Again Thanks for your help, If you could E-Mail me some Commands for Deleteing the files from Windows and Windows32 folder and moving my Program Files to DOS and EXE's to D:/Drive if I can do that. Also what to do about the missing VMM.VXD file and The Config.sys and aoutoexec.bat. I would so appreciate it as I can do nothing with out someone to guide me thru it. The books I have that came with Windows and the Computer tell you nothing at all abouyt MSDos thats why I was on the web all night. Mostly this page. I do think MSdos is kewl tho and I want to learn it so its not an all bad experience.(HaHaHa) And Thank You to anybody else who can help me with this problem I brought on myself.Lisa

Phuck Carez:
Are you always such an ASS?? Not that I should have to explain myself to you, but I will anyways. If you had read my message you would have seen that I said my Aptiva Boot Disk wouldn't work for some reason(Yes the Original Factory Floppy), I got an error message and the CD Rom would not Respond to the CD disk either, even with the WIN98 Boot Disk in the A:/ Drive. It would not recognize the disk when I put it in. Only the WIN98 Boot Disk and CD would work. I am not stupid and I do not think its funny, nor do I appreciate idiots like you acting like you are so superior. You just show your true ignorance. You must be quite bored if all you can do is visit web sites where people are tryin to get help and you make fun of them. Just remember what goes around comes aeound. Thank God not all people are like you. I bet ya make your parents real proud.

I have two Aptiva's, I also haven't carefully read all the posts here. However if you are having trouble with your proprietary recovery disk, its probably because of your startup boot sequence. In order to use the recovery disk you need to boot from the cd. To verify this at the IBM
startup screen hit F1, this will bring you into the bios depending upon the model look
for something called startup options, this will allow you to set the startup sequence.
Set to Floppy, CDrom, then Harddisk, choose save and exit to commit to changes. Then boot the machine with the cddrom labeled "Product Recovery CDROM" without the
floppy in the drive otherwise it will not work because IBM has created this disk to work only if the machine is booted from the cd if there is a floppy in the drive it will boot from that. This is the reason we checked the boot sequence in the bios if the
harddisk is before the cd in the boot sequence it also will not boot from the cd.
Remember proforming a product you will lose everything on the harddisk. I realize you want to save your files, this is possable, however saving your programs by simply copying the program files folder will not work you need the original program setup disks or copies of the program setup disks
because most windows programs need to be integrated with the registry to run. Simply restoring the programs files folder does not do this. Not knowing the nature of the programs you are trying to save I cannot for sure say that copying this folder to the D drive will help you also coping in dos with MS utilities will cause the loss of Long
File Names. My reccmmendation is to next time keep your personal files on a different
drive than the system drive D for instance.
I can tell you how to copy the program files folder to your D drive but this may not save all your work. It will only work if all of your programs were installed to C:\program files\*.* for the programs and then you saved the work from each program to the default destination and not MY DOCUMENTS in which case you would need to also save this folder.
BOOT MACHINE WITH WIN98 FLOPPY
SYNTAX IS
from C:\>type "MD D:\RESCUE"
hit enter
at C:\>type "xcopy /s C:\progra~1 D:\RESCUE
this should save your program files to a folder called rescue. To save the My Documents folder substitute progra~1 with mydocu~1

!!caution before copying your files to D:\ make sure this is not the msram drive if so this is not a hard drive and as soon as the computer reboots your files will be lost. The win98 boot disk creates a virtual drive in ram the way to check at prompt ie A:> type "dir" this will tell you what the drive is and its size. If it is a RamDrive then you only have one partition on your hardrive.
Then consider doing an upgrade install of windows
by inserting the win cd in the drive, change to the E: drive which should be your cd rom drive and at the E:\> known as the E prompt type setup and choose upgrade install this will also leave your program files folder intact plus clean up the mess in the windows directory because it will be replaced but your personal should be left alone

My D;/ is MSRAM Drive. Can I make another Drive if so how? Then I can move files to there. Then I can reformat C:/ right?? I also am very Low on Memory which I don't know how this happened because I had plent left when this happened. How can I remedy this? I don't think it will let me even do anything until I free up some memory. WIN 98 is an update disk as I had WIN 95. Now it won't even install cuz the WIN 95 files are no longer on my comp. And the WIN 95 Won't install because of misssing files: Device Driver MSD000, Himem.SYS, CD Rom Driver Not Installed, DBLBUFF.SYS, IFSHLP.SYS, ASPIDISK.SYS is not installed, Unable to open ASPI Manager, Error: ADAPTEC ASPI Device Driver not available. I know they must be on the C:/ or the WIN98 CD because if I bring up DIR they are there.Well some of them are any ways. What else can I do?
Thanks Again Ya'll for all your help.

Lisa:
You can make a new partition and copy your files to that partition.
You will have to do a few things:
1. Get your hands on a floppy disk with the correct cd-rom driver for your system.
2. next, get a copy of partition magic:
http://www.powerquest.com/partitionmagic/
3. Now, get the file pqmagic.exe and place on your floppy. You will now be working in dos mode (no more gui with memory errors or missing vxd's).
4. Boot the pc with the bootdisk and at the a prompt, execute pqmagic.exe (I forget exactly, but there is an online help).
5. Create a new partion and copy your data files to the new partition.
Note this will only save your data. As mentionned above, you will need the installation disks of your programs.
Once data is copied, reboot, fdisk and create your partitions, format and reinstall windows.
Another alternative for creating a new partition: do a net search for FIPS or go to:
http://members.nbci.com/Zeleps/
Please report back on your progress.

When you copy files in DOS they lose any long filenames, and some Windows drivers will not work when any part of the name is altered.
Unless you think of a better way, you need to save files that represent your personal work, and reinstall windows after you reformat C:. (There are utilities that will copy a longer file over two floppies or you could put a slave drive in the computer and copy files to it if you have another drive) Before you format you ought to remove your partition and go with two FAT16 logical drives. The wisdom of this is that you could have copied files to D: to store them temporrarily while you formatted if you had had a D: drive. Two Gigabytes is plenty for Windows 98.
All those upgrades--Win 95, Win 98--will install if you have Windows 3.11 install
floppies to validate with.
*********************************************
Before you do anything else boot with your startup disk and install from the Windows 98 Cd-ROM by typing SETUP at the CD-ROM drive.
(You format later if this does not work) Scandisk will run and may repair your files.
Whether it does or not, if setup will continue you are installing into an existing
Windows installation and will not have to validate. The advantage is that if it does install this way you will not lose any of your work (application files).

I had the same problem last week. I put the
win 98 boot disk in and win 98 cd in. after
it boots up type E:\ this will give you the
cd drive then type setup and follow the directions. at least it worked for me. good luck.

hi i have a old IBM PS/1AND I messed itup i had windows for workgroups 3.11 on it
and i put a older version on it an dit doesnt do ant thing, i cant even get to the A: prompt. i have the ibm ps/1 operationing disk but i cant get them to come up, do you know how i can formatt the harddrive on the ibm ps/1 computer, please help

Lisa,
I don't think you're going to get this system running!
Your main concern is to save your personal files. I'd suggest that you buy a box of floppies and copy those files even if you have to do them one at a time. I don't know how many you have,or how big they are. On one floppy you can put one file or a combination of files up to the 1.45 MB limit of a floppy. You don't need any additional software or hardware. You can copy one file at a time with the Dos command:
"copy C:\foldername\filename A:"
If your copying from the My Documents folder you can't enter that many characters when in Dos so the command to copy would be:
"Copy C:\mydocu~1\myfile.jpg a:\"
If your need to copy a long file name (say "ManDidIUseALongName.jpg"}from My Documents, the command would be:
"copy C:\mydocu~1\ManDid~1.jpg A:\"
You need to put the tilde character after the sixth character in the file or folder name and then the number. For similar file names that number will change for each.Once you've copied these files I'd suggest you follow the earlier replies about formatting the harddrive and reinstalling Windows. When you format the harddrive it'll be blank, everything is gone, personal files and all.
Another possibility is to buy a new harddrive, unplug the existing drive and install Windows on the new one. You'll then have to change the old drive to a "slave" drive. If you buy the same brand drive as your old one the instructions for the new one may be a good source of instructions on changing the jumper to make the old drive a slave. You can buy a new harddrive for about $75 and up.
It sounds from what you write though that you have upgrade install CD's for both Windows 95 and 98 and you can't install them to a blank harddrive. They sell "full versions" although the larger the store your dealing with the more likely it is they'll tell you they don't exist. They sell them at the computer shows. They're marked "For installation on a new computer only" but Microsoft's rules are that any mass storage (IE harddrive) qualifies as a new computer.
I checked this system, there's no vmm.vxd, and it's running.
I checked on this system there are no vxd files in the Windows\System32 folder so you could delete any there? (I think)Good luck!
