Comment: I need to show a total of 4 different ways a file can be copied using dos. Eg. Need to copy from A to C drive, I need to show 2 methods without showing the specific path, dos assumes the current directory apparently from Diskette to Harddrive and then back to Diskette from Harddrive ....please help.... This is what I am given, the file to be copied, at least 4 different ways: C:\ICS100E\A5> copy a:\a5.txt c:ics100e\a5

Reply: (edit)Crack open a DOS manual and figure out your homework yourself. Else, drop the class. Either way, it's all on your shoulders to do something.

Reply: (edit)Where is this guy gonna find a manual for an obsolete operating system. I have gone into book stores & could not find one on dos even in the older books section. It started from Win3.1 on up. Mark I apologise for the above statement. Look up dos or dos copy/xcopy command in any search engine & information should come up to help you. Help is help, whether it is for homework or not, & this is suppose to be a help forum I thought.

Reply: (edit)I could not find a manual in any store on dos also. I am from a very small city, (Sulphur Springs Texas) I advertised recently on a dos newsgroup about needing a dos manual & I found a person who was nice enough to send me his old one. I needed it for an old 386 I had gotten ahold of with dos 5.0 for an operating systems class. Might try going else where for help on the net like I did. Some people are nice & will offer you help regardless of what you are trying to do. Thanks, Jenny

Reply: (edit)This doomsday character must be a college professor or something. He comes down hard on people needing help if he thinks its for a class. Ignore the s--- head. If you cant offer any help like the others that posted here then dont even bother writing in. Then you tell him to open a manual or drop the class. Who are you to tell him that? You are a good for nothing b---tard. Everyone needs a little help with homework now & then & dont tell me that you never needed help ever in your life because I know it's a lie! Mark I will e-mail you with help.

Reply: (edit)Ok, think here for a second. If someone is taking a class on DOS, don't you think a required textbook (one that would be in the bookstore or whatever) for the course would be a DOS manual or some sort of DOS guide? Give me a break. You don't take a Mathematics course, for example, and have the teacher/professor expect you to do web searches for the required formulas. The owner of the question if just being lazy and having others do his work for him. Which seems to work quite often because apparently a number of you are either a) great condoners of cheating, or b) getting too fired up to help to think about the person's motives and situation. Either way, the only thing you're doing here is giving a lazy person one more break in life so that they can prolong learning responsibility.

Reply: (edit)Ok guys, I have a dos laboratory book from years ago from a class I was taking. The book gives reading & examples on how to do certain things in dos then it gives you lessons to try out on a computer running the dos operating system. Some things were not particularly clear & hard to understand (I remember a section in the book called advanced dos that kicked my ass)& it did help to have some sort of manual that explained things in more simple terms (remember dos for dummies) which helped me out tremendously & a host of others I remember seeing in book stores in the day. To bad though they dont sell any help books on dos anymore because they are very useful to people trying to learn it or have gotten ahold of an old pc with dos on it. You can though type help in the later versions to get help on most topics.

Reply: (edit)Hi, I wrote for help... I am in an Intro Computer class (ICS100E). My textbook does not have anything about DOS. My prof wants us to know something about DOS for future ICS classes, thats all. I was having trouble doing it on my own so I thought I'd ask pro's. Oh, and thanks for the support regarding the first response I had... Don't you think that if I had a text book I would read it.....hello Mcfly-hehe

Reply: (edit)I dunno...don't know you personally. We've had plenty of lazy people on here with simple tasks that just didn't want to do it. If you are indeed legitimate, Derrick's suggestion of "help" is a good place to start. It lets you peruse all of the commands available to you a la DOS and you can click them for a detailed overview (although not always *very* detailed) on their usage. Hmmm...I also used to have a web site URL that was sort of like help, only with better and longer examples. If I can find that then I'll post it as well. However this may all be in vain as in to prove a point a number of people have already simply given you the answer instead of (once again relying on legitimacy) allowing you to feel the excitement of finding it out yourself. Still, maybe "help" and any other info will help you in the future.

Reply: (edit)Doomsday, I understand your pessimism; I used to be the same way, until I realized that it only made me a very unhappy and an anti-social person. I suspect you are of the ‘C’ word influence…=Conservative-teehee. Complaining and bitching only makes your life more miserable and you pass on that negativity to anyone willing to tolerate it. Smiles are contagious, as is negativity. I hope that you can see the more innocent and naïve side of people. Not everyone asking for help is lazy. Being compassionate, caring and kind are virtues to strive for, not run away from. Strive to make the world better place, not worse. ;-)

Reply: (edit)Ronin: It comes with being opinionated. :) Mark: No, it's nothing personal so far as I know. What this whole thing started from was me happily answering everyone's questions until one day I answered a series of three or four questions by the same person. After that, someone enlightened me that the same questions were asked repeatedly in the past because it was homework and a lot of people came here for pure answers, not a finger pointing in the right direction. I asked the person about it and they told me "thanks for doing my homework...hahaha" or something of the sort - to which I used every profanity I could devise. Since then, I question anyone asking for help on something that sounds like homework. You came back and defended yourself, and even had you done that with no input from the Peanut's gallery, I'd still have told you about "help". I just wanted to check to make sure that at least you could sound genuine. One ruins it for all, as they say. The site I had was for UNIX, but a quick Google search gave me this site which looks promising... http://www.computerhope.com/msdos.htm#02
