I had win98 on my system but i let a friend use my computer and It was all screwed up, so I went to fdisk and deleted the partition then created another with fat32, but when I restsrted it to install win98 it came up with an error message saying that win98 couldn't be installed. when I restsrted my system there was no drive C: so I went to my bios and did a pre format when it was done there still was no drive c: so I tried fdisk again and it came up with an error message saying error reading reading fixed disk. What did I do wrong and how can I fix this problem. My system will boot up and it reconizes the hard drive, but wont go to the C: prompt nor install dos or windows or go back to fdisk/ why????

you will need to fdisk the drive again.
If I have this correct, you are booting from a floppy (or cdrom) and running fdisk from there and it's giving you this error? Is this an old computer with a newer hard drive in it?

this is from:
http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000379.htm

Issue:

Error reading/writing fixed disk.

Cause:

This error can be caused by:

Hard drive not setup properly in CMOS.
Hard drive not connected
Bad hard drive.
Solution:

Hard drive not setup properly in CMOS

Insure that the hard disk drive is setup as Auto or correctly manually configured in CMOS.

Additional information about how to enter CMOS can be found on our CMOS page.
Listings of hard disk drives CMOS settings can be found on our hard disk drive specifications page.
Hard drive not connected

Open the computer case being aware of ESD and insure that the cables are properly connected to the hard disk drive as well as connected from the hard drive to the interface card or motherboard.

Bad hard drive

If the hard disk drive is setup as auto or is correctly manually configured and the cables appear to be connected properly it is likely that the hard disk drive is bad. It is recommended a new hard disk drive be purchased or that the computer be serviced.

Hard disk drive buying tips can be found on our hard disk drive buying tips page.

Well the best thing to do if you have windowns 98 startup disk is just to format your drive. first insert the startup disk. then after it load type fdisk, now delete all partion. then restart with the startup disk in the computer. the after it loaded again type "c:format" then wait until its done. after that restart your computer again, and create a new partition. and restart with the startup disk on the computer again. but this time you have to put in the windows 98 cd in the computer too. so both the start up diskette and windows 98 cd is in the drive. now select the thing that say run with cd-rom support or something. after that in a: promt type "e:" then if you are in e prompt type set up. and after all of these things everything will be fine. if you have more question please dont hesitate to email me at verycuteasian@yahoo.com
