i cant get my speakers to work

the speakers are plugged into the right plug but i think it may be hooked up to the pc wrong it worked on our other comp but it crashed and we havent gotten it back yetwe have a hewlett packard but the pc is a compaq preasario and i cant figure out y it isn't working some one help!!!
