daniel, check the ribbon (flat & wide) cable that goes into the harddrive; make sure you didn't install it "upside-down" or "downside-up". some cables have a little notch in the middle of the plastic connector which prevents you from installing the cable upside-down; some don't. also, check the other end of the ribbon cable, the end that plugs into the motherboard or i/o card; it may be upside-down.

only do one at a time; if you flip both at the same time, you still may have it backwards!

also make sure your computer is turned off before doing this; and don't wear wool socks!. ground yourself out on the computer's metal casing before touching anything inside. one little static shock and you may not be able to boot the computer up again.

Make sure the Harddrive is detected by the BIOS.
Upu may want to try and use the utility FDISK; remove all partitions and then create a single new one.
Or best of all; download maxtor's hard drive setup utility maxblast; it can be sued on any harddrive. when it asks if you install a maxtor harddrive; just say yes.
Good Luck
