Hi all. In my home, I have 3 machines very similar beetwen them, and I want to link with Ethernet. The data I found in internet is very confusing. I have in all mothers, the same network card, an ISA UMC9008 whit the driver active ( from a program that comes with the driver, I can see the device), and I have two of them linked with the crossover cable, so the link led´s are on. But, I don´t uderstand what more I must do. Some tell me that I must install a Lan Manger, but it apparently works with a server working NT. I want that 3 machines be at the same level of importance. Can anybody tell me the wright form to do this? Very thanks, Osvaldo from Argentina.

Firstly to link all 3 computers you need three RJ45 Patch Cables and a Hub, or if your NIC's have BNC Connectors you can use 10Base-2 cabling.

Microsoft Network Client 3.0 can be used in a standalone DOS LAN, but it uses 300K of the base memory:

There are alternatives depending on what compatibility you need to Windows/Mac/Linux etcetc, such as Novell Netware and Artisoft Lantastic.......

Personally in a pure DOS LAN of less than 5 PC's I prefer NeOS, though it is an obsolete product has many advantages especially if you wish to use the LAN for routing an Internet Connection.

Check out Novell Netware Lite.

This was a product for small dos networks, for two or more pc's each with nothing more than a network card.

Good luck - Keep us posted.

Thanks, boys. I´ve downloaded the files you suggested me, but in the week end I ´ll try them. Although, I still have a question: is it imperative to have a machine that actuates as server, or I may have all them in the same level of importance? Sorry, I am Electronic Engineer, but in PC networks, I am novice, and hate Windows!!. I only use it in extreme cases.

If you want a pure DOS network then NeOS is the way to go, as uses less memory, if you need Packet Drivers for the Cards then post back!

Very thanks, boys. I found in internet, the NeOS v 1.51. Although, I don´t install it yet, I read the readable files, and I believe that it is just I was looking for.
The next week I ´ll tell you what happen with my poors 486´s. Thanks, again...
