You need to copy MSCDEX.exe for the version of DOS you are using to the \DOS directory. There is another possibility. If you are installing a DOS driver in Windows and the installation software looks for MSCDEX in the DOS directory, you will manually have to change the path in the autoexec.bat from C:\DOS\MSCDEX to C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX

get a cd boot disk from www.bootdisk.com take the drivers 1) mscdex.exe 2) the .sys files that will recognize your cd AND LET YOU DO A DIR ON THE CONTENTS 3) the line from config.sys 4) the line from autoexec.bat copy 3 and 4 to your autoexec and config files EXACTLY the /d: that may appear is NOT drive D: , it must be the same in both lines even the files fromn a win 98 bootdisk should work normally windows 95/98 does not use a dos mode cd driver EXCEPT when you boot from a floppy to install.
