I have tried to install "Windows for Workgroup 3.11" on my older computer (which is now running Windows98) and after i installs it It's not working. I don't have an experience installing such an old operaitng system and I probably did something wrong in the installation. can someone guide me how to install win 3.11?
I heard that i need to install MS-DOS 6 before i install win3.11, how can i do that?

Windows 3x is NOT an operating system, and has no "DOS" "in" it.

You must obtain a copy of MS-DOS (or other compatible dos) and install that first, then install your windows 3x.

If you want to stay with this, it is an EXCELLANT way to learn a little about how DOS works, which by the way carries over into 95/98/ME to some degree.

Well, come on now - Win98 has its own DOS already. Win3xx can be installed on such a system - although obviously (I hope) you must install to a directory other than your existing c:\windows that 98 is in.

Once installed, you would have to boot to DOS and run that version of Windows from its directory.

There's a patch (3xstart.exe) to coax Win3xx to get along with Win98DOS - get it @Mick's

Well, jboy, I think when I read this this morning, I thought that he was going to format the drive, and install it stand-alone.

I can see now that there is two ways to take this.

Oh, sure - and it's not as if an abundance of details were provided - just my favourite 'description': "It's not working".

.. and my "come on now" was meant in a jocular, comradely way - not confrontational : )

should read

"There's a patch (3xstart.exe) to coax Win95c/98/98se inbuilt DOS 7.10 to get along with Win3x"

Since its IO.SYS it patchs to remove Microsofts deliberate block to stop Win3x working in the first place!

Its painless to install, and I have yet to hear of any problems with its use (Other than from those who do not read the user notes first!

Extract from User Notes:

Just start W3XSTART.exe. The program gives you three options, "Apply Changes", "Undo Changes" and "Exit". The first option saves the data to be modified to the backup file W3XSTART.BIN in current directory and then patches IO.SYS. The program looks for IO.SYS on C:\, if for any reason it is not found there it prompt's you to enter a full path. In this case be careful because any filename is accepted and minimal error testing is done only by checking file size and searching for an OSR2/Win98 specific string. Normally, IO.SYS is located in the root directory of your boot drive with it's attributes set to Read Only, Hidden and System. But first of all Win3xStart will check your DOS version and terminates if it's different from 7.10 (OSR2/Win98).

The second option restores all changes from W3XSTART.BIN, the third finally aborts the program without any actions.

Because IO.SYS is an Windows 95/98 system file that is used during boot process, I strongly recommend to use Win3xStart from a Windows 95/98 floppy boot disk.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This disk must NOT be write protected !

Doing so, the backup file will be in a safe place and in case of complete failure you are able to boot from that disk again and to safely restore
all modifications from WIN3XSTART.BIN by the 2nd option in Win3xStart.

After applying the patch, reboot your machine to DOS mode and install Windows 3.x

Right - I did misstate that, and was not aware of all the specifics.

Maybe this is not for you

RE-read the first answer. Windows 3xx is NOT an operating system.

We aren't sure what you have and are trying to do?

Are you trying to install Win3xx to operate on the same hard drive with W98?

Or, are you trying to install W3xx on a separate, emty hard drive?
