OS: ms-dos 5.0
CPU/Ram: 166/32
Comment:

Does anyone remember how to install cd rom drivers and configure it to run at every startup in autoexec? It has been so long I forget. Also how do I add mouse to the autoexec while i'm in there. I get tired of having to start it manualy every time!

Also one last thing .. how do I copy my big ol 5.25 in ms dos 5 disk's to 3.5" disk's.

The old one's are gettin worn and i don't know how much longer the big ol floppy drive will last! Or better yet can I just make a bootable cd install of ms dos 5 from the disks? If not the first on will work.

Thanks

Really? How long have you been running DOS5?

How have you been loading your CD drive?

On the off chance this is a serious inquiry, here is some very basic DOS information:

Autoexec.bat & Config.sys

Most DOS info available is based on MS-DOS6 or higher - you will find some essential files just aren't present (mscdex, edit) in MS-DOS5

These guys at computerhope.com are too beserk for me.

"However because Microsoft is trying to steer away from Windows these files are not required for Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT or Windows 2000."

I guess making $M a week isn't as much fun as it used to be.

"If the mouse drivers are no loaded properly you will not have the capability of navigating the mouse. On our edit page we have listed"

Me no kapeesh no loaded.

And what do these guys have against stacks? I always thought they were kinda neat.

" the /D:123 is the name of the driver name that loads in upper memory this can be anything usually /D:MSCD0001 however this is not an actual driver this is just the name for the driver."

[HUH?]

Hi Chad,

Boot on your DOS 5 floppy. Let's assume it's A: and your 3.5" is B:, then:

FORMAT B:/s

Then copy all the 5.25" to 3.5":

xcopy a:\ b:\

M2

Chad - if you had provided your e-mail address (denoted by your name underlined, like mine) responders would have sent you helpful info.

On copying dos:-

a)would it not be better to move on to version 6.2x, which was better than 5.

b) use the SYS command (if available with v5) to copy the hidden hiles, and then just copy the other files using
COPY B:*.* A: /V

Check carefully the volume labels, as I seem to recall there were many spaces used.
Good luck - Keep us posted.

I tried to do a direct copy a:*.* to b: on the dos install disks but didn't work. I have never tried xcopy or the sys command so
I will try those suggestions soon. I am lucky to still have my floppy drive cleaning kit and cleaned the 5.25 floppy drive which let me install dos 5.0

I have dos 6.22 on the original 3.5 inch disks but I started out on ms dos 5 and windows 3.1 on the big ol 5.25"s. It came with my old 486/33 with the 200meg hard drive and 4 megs of ram.

I am moving this system over to a pentium 166mhz with 32 meg of ram a 850 meg hard drive. I have also installed a 3com isa 10 mb network card and a old isa creative sound card, a cd rom "which I found the install drivers which automatically set up my sys and bat files for me:)", a 3.5 in disk drive and a 5.25 in disk drive.

I also have a iomega 100mb external/ parallel zip drive and if I get really brave an old isa scsi card and Rioch cd burner which work great currently in a p2 333 computer but awfuly slow only burning at a whopping 2x!

I will try and keep posted with my updates.

I currently have ms dos installed, cd rom working, and mouse drivers installed and working. I am trying to figure out the networking since I am getting an Error 8 memory problem. See other post if you think you can help with that one.

I'm just wondering how you've managed to get this far, yet did't know how to load your mouse from autoexec etc - began to believe you were spoofin'

If you're only copying data disks (non bootable, non "copyright protected") then you can use xcopy *.* - - otherwise, WinImage (or similar DOS based application) might be a way to go.

You can create a system disk from your current DOS5 install using the sys command, on the floppy drive of your choice.

DOS5 was something in its time - 622 considerably better, with a better help system.

Give me a break I haven't messed with dos in like 15 years! I was only 15 back then and my dad wouldn't let me dig right in to his expensive toy. Expecially when he droped $200 for the first cd rom and sound card for it. The first computer he unleashed me on was a p/75 with windows 95.
I didn't get the 486 till about a year ago.

Anyways what's up with the Error 8? Do I need to get some kind of memory program or something? I only got into basic commands in dos and it's a pain in the a$$ with out any books and google isn't always your best friend.

Sure it is

while many of those links refer to a Win9x environment, the basic principles are the same.

Believe it or not, that question has come up... oh, once or twice before on these forums - there is a search feature available here as well.

Computerhope too

As has been mentioned, you will be somewhat hampered by using DOS5 - but that's up to you.
DOS6xx has superior memory management, as well as a fairly comprehensive Help program (which, ten years later, I still occasionally refer to)

Good luck & happy computing

did this guy's question ever get answered? If so, I didn't see it in the clutter

In your config.sys file you'll need the line,
DEVICE=C:\CDROM\GSCDROM.SYS /D:MSCD000
this assumes your cd driver is in a folder called 'cdrom' and the driver is called 'gscdrom.sys'... change these to reflect your driver name and location

then, in your autoexec.bat file, you'll need this line
C:\CDROM\MSCDEX /D:MSCD000
again, 'cdrom' should be changed to the folder where mscdex is on your system

that's pretty much all you need, unless the cd drive is an external or not ide

#5 I currently have ms dos installed, cd rom working, and mouse drivers installed and working.

You really should at least try to read all of the responses before replying - but thanks for your input.

I beg your pardon oh lord of the forum... it was just so cluttered with complete garbage, it was impossible to read most of the responses

I won't try to help anyone on here anymore, since the forum is obviously full of trollish characters... oh, and one policeman. ta!

We'll try to go on without you (somehow)

One troll less now, it would seem.

The information was right there, so it does not speak well of your abilities.
