Subject: How to create a MS-Dos boot partition?
Comment:

I am trying to install Windows 95 on a Dell Latitude laptop. Usually it is not a difficult task, but I have a couple of troubles on the way. When I received the computer what I found is "no system disk" message on the screen. Aparently the C drive was unformatted, so I had to format it from a floppy. Then the other problem is that the computer didn't have a CD-ROM drive, so I decided to copy the Windows 95 files from the Windows cd to flopies and to the laptop. After a lot of work I finally copy all the files needed to run the Windows setup on the laptop, but... When the setup is running is suddenly stop and bring me up a sad message "'Error SU-0013'-To set up Windows 95, your startup drive must be an MS-DOS boot partition.
If your startup drive is an HPFS or Windows NT file system, you must create
an MS-DOS boot partition before running Setup. For more information, on
creating an MS-DOS boot partition, see the documentation that came with
your computer."
I don't have any documentation for the laptop!! I have no idea on how to create a MS-DOS boot partition!! I don't want to reformat the drive and copy the Windows setup files again! Do you have any idea to help me pleaseeee!!!!!! :<

This error happens when your hard drive has a partition other than FAT16 on it. LANtastic and SuperStor compressed drives will also cause Windows to generate this error message.

download a Win95 boot disk from:
www.bootdisk.com
You'll need to know whether you're using Win95A or Win95B (probably you have Win95B).
Boot using the Win95B diskette, then use the fdisk program on the diskette to remove any partitions on your drive. Then create a new partition. You'll have to reboot for the new partition to be recognized. Then run the setup program.

Help please. I have recently had my system crashed and a friend told me that when hers crashed she just reinstalled Windows 98 and the system was up for her to copy or transfer all her important files from her hard drive. I am getting the following message each time I try to reinstall win98. I don't have the paperwork on my comp as I bought it used and the company who sold it originally is now out of business. "To set up Windows 98, your startup drive must be an MS-DOS boot partition.
If your startup drive is an HPFS or Windows NT file system, you must create
an MS-DOS boot partition before running Setup. For more information, on
creating an MS-DOS boot partition, see the documentation that came with your computer."

Any help is appreciated before I take a sledge hammer to my computer and smash it into 100000000 pieces. Thanks! You can email me at wandaful@excite.com

Boot up your pc from a windows startup disk, preferably a 98 disk. It will allow you to boot up with CD Rom support. Choose this when given the option. At the A: Prompt, type FDISK and hit enter. Do not choose to use the largest amount of your hard drive, type N for no and hit enter. You will need to create a Primary Dos Partion. Leave about 1 MB out from the Primary DOS partition. Example; it asks you if you how much of the total hard drive space do you want to use, leave out about 1 MB, this will be used for the MS-DOS Boot partition. After the Primary DOS partition is made, you can set it active. This will allow you to install the OS with no Problem. I know these directions suck, but I hope it helps. Just remember to leave out about 1 MB of your hard drive from your Primary DOS Partition. You might not even need that much but if you have the space, who cares?? Good Luck

I am having problems with the dos partition. I booted up from a win 98 boot disk and then it told me that if i have hfpt type file on my computer then i have to create a ms dos boot partition. I went to the A drive and typed fdisk. It told me that no fixed drives were present. I would appreciae any light someone could shed on this subject. E-mail me at bmitche420@hotmail.com...
