I dont know how to copy the files from the disk to the hard drive (i am not DOS friendly). I downloaded a file, unzipped it but now am stuck. Thank you for your help!

thank you very much x86 - only i still cant figure it out (boy do i feel dumb today lol). The 386 computer boots from a floppy in drive a. That seems to be the only drive since when i try to change the drive to c: it says bad command. I am starting to wish I never started this "little" project. I went to the page you suggested - but when I follow the comands listed to copy files it doesn't work (for me). I have a bunch of files on a floppy that I need to copy to the hard drive so I can finish installing the CD ROM (I am swapping out a broken CD ROM for a newer one). I have been told all I need to do is install the driver...but i obviously cant seem to do this since the files are still on the floppy and not on the computer. This computer does not run Windows and I am so unsure of DOS commands. I am LOST PLEASE HELP ME!!! THANKS

To make a hard drive except files first it must have a Fat partition which is active, see:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;255867You do not copy system files to the hard drive you use the command at the A: prompt
SYS C: press enter to transfer filesI would suggest you pop along to http://www.bootdisk.com and download a boot floppy and the CD DOS drivers, which will work with nearly all CD drives, unless the CD is connected to the sound card. Please note the downloads are winimages......

Also there is no need to shout, please also look at http://www.computing.net/dos/wwwboard/forum/14330.html

Copying a file from floppy disk to your
computer's hard-drive using DOS is usually
a fairly simple process. (Assuming that
your computer's hard-drive is in reasonably
good shape, and that you have a working
copy of DOS to boot the computer with,
either from a bootable floppy, or from the
computer's C: drive.)
For the sake of argument let's assume that
I have file residing on a floppy, and that
the name of the file is, Mouse.txt. I
would either use the copy command or the
xcopy command to copy the file.
The command that I would type would look
something like this.
copy A:\rat.txt C:\rat.txt
If the file I want to copy is located
within a directory on the floppy, and I
want to copy it into a directory on the
computer's hard-drive, then I would have to
include the paths to where the file is now
located and where I want to copy it to.
for example if mouse.txt is located in a
directory named "pests" on the floppy, and
I want to copy it to a directory called
"traps" on my hard-drive then the command
would look like the example below.
copy A:\pests\rat.txt
C:\traps\rat.txt
You may want to respond and tell us what
version od DOS it is you are using to run
your computer.

Thank you to all who have helped me over the last few weeks...I am still having troubles copying the files from the a drive to the hard drive in dos 6.22(aaaaagggghhhhhhh) it says parse error 1... what the heck is parse??? I do not have windows installed. Here is what i typed:
copy a:\setup.exe c:\
then i tried: copy a:\setup.exe c:\cdpro
same error message...confused in canada

From your comments, it appears your pc does not recognise the hard drive.
If this is the case, until it does you will not be able to copy any files to it.
a) are you only able to boot from the floppy?
b) when booted, what response do you get, when entering C: ?
Good luck - Keep us posted.
