Please suggest how to compress the file in DOS in order to copy it on the floppy. Which command do I have to use?

You'll need to download a program like PKzip to compress it. When you find one just run the program with no parameters and it should list all the command line options and tell how to use it.

If the file is still too big. You may have
to split the files. There are utilities to
do it. The pieces must be reassembled before
you can use the file.

PKZip 2.04g also supported disk spanning - it would permit you to have a large zip file continue over several floppies.....

If you want a compressor that easyly supports spaning disks, and with a nice DOS IDE, take a look at RAR 2.50 (www.rarlab.com) or ACE 2.04 (www.winace.com).

I recommend PKZIP/PKUNZIP for dos, which can be downloaded.
They have many facilities (possibly too many), some of which require experimentation to fully understand how they function.
For example it can span discs, with optional degrees of formating, and retain the directory structure or not.
Good luck - keep us posted.

Hello may I know how does the command goes if I wanted to make up a script to zip a 10MB files into a few diskette?
Thanks

It is unlikely even with compression that 10 mb of files will go into a few floppy's, more like 6-7 or more.
When you download PKZIP/PKUNZIP the instructions together with the various options come with it.

I'm in the same situation, I need to copy files that are too large for 1.44mb disks. I've downloaded and installed pkzip. Can anyone take the time out and illustrate how to actually make it work with a file in dos. Would be much appreciated.

Eric and Marwan - please see my earlier posting. You must do it yourself as there are many variables depending on what you are copying at the time. If you just enter the programs name it provides limited help screens.
An example of usage:-
PKZIP -P -r -&w A:OUTPUT C:\INPUT\*.*
-P = store path names
-r = recurse(copy) sub-directory contents
-& = span output discs
w = quick wipe output discsA:OUTPUT = output on drive a
zipfile called OUTPUT.ZIPC:\INPUT\*.* = input from drive c
all files and sub-directories
in directory called INPUTWith PKZIP/PKUNZIP there should be a manual, but it can be rather heavy going as there is so much of it. If required I can e-mail my copy (version 2.04g) but it might be somewhat out of date now.
Good luck - keep us posted.

ARJ is also an option, it shouldn't be hard to find. When you downloaded it, type "arj", and you will get a list of commands.
Good luck!
