OK, I read alot of advice here and there about how to install DOS and WIN 3x and I'm just confused!
I want to know how to start from a freshly formatted HD and install DOS 6.22 and then WIN 3.11.
I formatted my HD {FAT16}. Downloaded Boot disk from Bootdisk.com {DOS6.22}. I downloaded DOS 6.22 from www.geocities.com/astroraptor15. This download was 3 Zipped files. I extracted these onto floppys. The boot disk works and at A prompt I inserted Disk 1 and typed setup.exe. It told me to insert Disk 1 and restart. When I do so, I get "Invalid system disk".
I read that I must make a Disk image of the DOS disks, but Winimage won't work {these are zipped files}...should I try another DOS 6.22?...where can I get DOS??
I also read that I must copy the files from Disk 1 onto the Boot disk????? I tried this, after I replaced the duplicate files, it still ran out of room...I'm sure that I am just totally misunderstanding these instructions.
My plans for this old machine is to run dos/win3.1, create a partition for Linux and install slackware. Ha ha!!! I can't even get passed installing DOS!
Someone please help this Idiot!

thanks,
_____steven

Hi, Steven! Forgot to label the disks?
Try labeling DISK 1, DISK 2,
DISK 3. There's 6 spaces between DISK and the number. I once had a program that
refused to load because of the labeling.
Remember to format the first disk with /S
-switch. Good luck and best regards,

OK! I formatted the floppy w/s and then copied the disk 1 files to it. Whether I replaced the system files w/new ones or not, it still didnt have enough room on the disk.
I was able boot from the disk! This was my problem as far as that goes....but, do I need to eliminate some of the files on disk 1???? Which ones? What the heck am I doing wrong now!!! LOL

You have to boot with version 6.22 to install 6.22. So download a 6.22 boot disk rather than entering FORMAT A: /s. Delete all the files on the downloaded boot disk except Command.Com and remove all directories. In the unlikely event that you still run out of room on DISK 1, enter
ATTRFIB -s -h -r DRVSPACE.BIN and delete it.
Then enter ATTRIB. You should have two hidden files, IO.SYS and MSDOS.SYS. Plus you have Command.Com that is not hidden. Now your files for Disk......1 will fit on the floppy. Boot with this floppy and enter SETUP.
It is better not to install Windows 95 and up on the drive later with out a complete format because this jury rig flags the installation, and Windows 95 and up will start acting up sometimes.

Hey! now I know what I was doing wrong. I have my view files as show hidden files...thus I was deleting the hidden files.
I got Disk 1 to work....BUT it turned out to be an Upgrade version of 6.22! BLAH! So I upgraded another drive w/DOS5.0 and win3.1 on just for $hit$ and giggles.
Where can I get DOS 6.22? (not upgrade) Do I need to break down and find it on ebay?

Oh! one more thing (as if!)... can one get win 3x or 6.22 to work on a network of other windows machines? (win 98 and win2000)

Anyway,
Thank you Fred!

I've installed dos6.22 to an empty drive before. sys the hardrive, copy the *.??_ files onto the hardrive and expand each file one at a time with msdos expand command. It works like this: expand emm386.ex_ emm386.exe
Once you are done erase the *.??_ files.
