Type FORMAT D: and replace D: with the drive you want to format (A:, B: C:, D: ...). If you want to boot from the hard drive, you can use format to add the system files, like this: FORMAT C: /S If you want a list on swithes for format, type FORMAT /?

You should always format from DOS. Boot from a floppy. Stay on drive A:. Then follow the instructions in reply 1.: Type FORMAT C: and press enter. Or Format /u C:. You only use /s if the format version you are using is the version you will install, and you can't Format C: if you are booted to it. (You would erase format.exe as you format), and although format is in memory, at the very next step you would be in trouble.
