how do you edit the required files in order to properly install ms dos and hence how do you locate the cd-rom???

go to www.bootdisk.com and download one of the bootdisk's. Put the info on a floppy and look inside the autoexec.bat file and the config.sys file for said info.
use the edit command to view files.

Config.sys and Autoexec.bat can be editted with any basic text editor. Depending on your DOS version you may even have one included called Edit.com. To edit Config.sys at the command line (C:/>) type:
edit config.sys
The text editor will open the current (original) version of config.sys. Make your additions, deletions, corrections, then go to the top of the text editor and select the word File. Under File you'll see such options as Save, Save-As and Exit. If you select 'Save' then Config.sys is saved with the changes you just made. If you select 'Save-As' you can save Config.sys under a different name (ex.-Config.new). The original Config.sys file remains unchanged. To use Config.new you would have to rename Config.sys something else (ex.-Config.old) and then rename Config.new to Config.sys. If you select 'Exit' you are asked if you want to save your changes before exiting. If you don't save your changes Config.sys will remain unchanged.

If your disk is already formatted, and you are using, for instance, DOS 6.22...
With the computer off, put disk 1 in the floppy drive.
When the computer starts up, it should boot up to the floppy drive and begin the installation.
Just do what it tells you to do from then on.
That will load DOS and create your basic Autoexec.bat and Config.sys.
Then go to your CD-ROM manufacturer's website. There you should be able to download the drivers for your CD-ROM drive. It is almost always an Install program that is run from DOS. It will edit your AUTOEXEC.bat and CONFIG.sys for you and create the proper directory to load the drivers.
It might ask you where MSCDEX.exe is located-it's in C:\DOS
If you can't locate the CD-ROM drivers at the MFR's site try;

www.driverguide.com
www.windrivers.com
