Hello Guys, I am in the process of teaching myself MS-DOS 6.22 and I allready have Window's ME.

Ive got a 20GB IBM Hard Drive and I'd like to Dual boot DOS 6.22 & ME.

I have no Idea how to do this. Ive been searching the internet and found a few useful piece of information like the fact I must install MS-DOS 6.22 first then instal Windows ME second. MS-DOS 6.22 must go on a FAT16 partition and I would be better off putting WinME on a FAT32 partition.

Other than that I am totally lost. Can someone explain the process I need to go through to do this sucessfully?

Thanks for your time.

just make two partitions
one fat 16 and one fat 32
then install dos on the fat 16 partition and
windows ME on the fat 32 partition

If you do the above ME is most likely to overwrite DOS 6.22 with its own DOS 8.

Alternatively you can also run DOS 6.22 inside ME by using an emulator such as Bochs or preferably VMWare (commercial).

First of all, VMWARE is an NT/2000/XP product... it will not run on ME. Second... Just upgrade to ME, when you do, just as in Win95 & 98, you can boot to the Boot Menu (F8 during boot) and select "Previous DOS Version". This restores all DOS settings prior to the upgrade and lets you boot completly to the Previous Version. During the upgrade ME copies all your old files and renames them like autoexec.DOS, config.DOS, etc... when you select "Previous DOS" it names them back temporerally So you do get the old DOS version number. You can edit your MSDOS.SYS file and on the SHOWBOOTMENU option put the number 1 instead of 0. This will prompt you on every boot.

That sound slike a sound Idea but I am not following you very well.

I'm not a computer expert but I do have window's ME and DOS6.22.

You mentioned alot of things and i cannot understand how to do it without explicit instructions but i dont think you should have to take all that time so it's okay . Thanks anyway . Ill try searching the internet for more information.

It is not practical to do this with a 20 Gigabyte hard drive. To run 6.22 the drive has to have ten 2 Gigabyte logical drives on it. Use one of your smaller drives for this. You only need a 4.3 Gigabyte drive.
Other than that you need a Boot Manager to do this. One called LILO comes with LINUS and I think it comes with Norton's Ghost. There are plenty of other boot managers also. I believe Partition Magic contains one.

Well there are many ways you can dual boot. You can partition your harddrive and install DOS 6.22 and the other half is for Windows ME. Other option is you can use Partition Magic to do dual-boot.

Good luck
