Comment: Exactly, step by step, how do I create an MS-DOS boot partition. I have a laptop that I'm trying to load an operating system on. Before I can do that, it says, "Cannot create a temporary directory. If you have HPFS or NTFS installed on your hard drive, you will need to create an MS-DOS boot partition to set up Windows."

Reply: (edit)Do you have an OS allready loaded? What does FDISK report when you select the "Display Partition Information" option?

Reply: (edit)No. No operating System. I'm trying to install Windows. When I run FDisk, it says "no fixed drives present". A:\>fdisk gives me "no fixed disks present." A:\>scandisk /all drive C gives me: 2042 clusters, 0 found bad ScanDisk did not find any problems on drive C I used my other computer, d/l'd a file called mrbooter. Then ran it on the computer I'm trying to install windows on. It says: Hd|Partition Type|Detected OS|Size|Vol|Label 1 Unknown Unknown 8736 1 Unknown Unknown 0 1 Unknown Unknown 45024 2 Unknown Unknown 27527 2 Unknown Unknown 43112 2 Unknown Unknown 24589 2 Unknown Unknown 32 5 Unknown Unknown 35040 5 Unknown Unknown 33984 5 Unknown Unknown 256 But I dont know what I'm doing. Dont even know if this is how I can create an MS-DOS partition. I can get the computer to recognize my external disk drive (Backpack) and I put my Windows CD in that drive and run setup and it starts to show the blue screen which goes thru the checks of drive C: but that only flashes for one second then displays: "Please wait while Setup initializes. Cannot create a temporary directory. If you have HPFS or NTFS installed on your hard drive, you will need to create an MS-DOS boot partition to set up Windows. D:\> ...but I dont know how to create an MS-DOS boot partition.

Reply: (edit) I believe your hard disk drive c: has been compressed by a compression program maybe drive space. that is 1 reason it says that. And the only way to undo this is with the correct compressor. Wish you luck . My opinion I(EASY) get another drive... Sorry. Billy Lindsey

Reply: (edit)most older computers - at the time over 80% were never equipped with a hard drive ever , or the possibility of being able to have one. These were 286/386 and some 486 computers. So do you even know if this laptop has a hard disk, and if so if it is even physically functional? you can go on ebay and buy a real computer for under $100 delivered, that is a pentium, that can run windows 9x. If you cant find one, ill give you one from the ten in my basement. If you need a laptop buy a new one, if you intend to depend on it.

Reply: (edit)the file mrbooter you downloaded contains an efdisk utility which can handle pretty much all partitions. chack the documentation of this utility on how to remove partitions and how to create a dos partition.

Reply: (edit)I'm having the same problem with my new computer that I just got. It doesn't have an os and when I try to install Win98 it says the same thing. And then when I try to run fdisk I get an error message that says "error reading fixed disk" This is a brand new computer that's never been used before. I don't understand why it's doing this

Reply: (edit)http://freepctech.com/pc/001/001.shtml This web site tells you exactly how to partition the drive. When this is done widows setup will format the hard drive. Hopefully this will work for you.

Reply: (edit)ddragon, I just spent mega hours with the same error (word for word) and tried just about everything. In the end I swapped the IDE ribbon, and walla it goes. Now it could've been a loose connection or a shonky ata66 cable (only just learned about them here: http://www.bootdisk.com/txtfiles/hdd.txt) Who cares, if it works!

Reply: (edit)I'm having the same problem... I know it's kind of late. I tried to install Windows 95 on a very old laptop. First it's telling me that the hard drive is compressed or that there's a compression utility present in the drive then it's telling me that I need to create an ms-dos partition in order to install Windows. How can I decompress the drive? And if there's a compression utility how can I get rid of it? Thanks a lot you guys for your help!!
