I could use some explicit instructions on how to check what version of DOS im running.I am using Win98SE is there any reason i should update the dos that comes with this version of windows? Ive heard talk about dos v.6.22 and im not sure that's the version that coems with win98se.Thanx for your help. Breann

Windows 98 has its own DOS version, some programs like scandisk are custimized fpor a certain system (microsoft things get updated and you cant give someone scandisk that has 6.22) if you want to know a version type ver at the C:\>_ prompt

Josh is correct in saying that Windows 95 & 98 have thier own versions of MS-DOS (Which is version 7.0 or 7.10) But if you type VER at the DOS prompt as he surgests, you will only get the Windows version!

the dos that comes with windows 9x is a cut down version of 6.22
at the command prompt if you type
ver you get the dos version
winver you get the windows versionyou could also have a look in msdos.sys on the root(hidden) as it contains the full windows version as one of its settings.
As for upgrading the dos version. you can find some of the old 6.22 files on the windows installation cd. Most dos users have a selection of replacement commands for most of the ones supplied with dos. eg differnt versions of FC.EXE, TYPE, DIR etc

Mr O you are misinformed:
Windows 95/98 does NOT have a cutdown version of MS-DOS 6.22. It has MS-DOS 7.0 or 7.1 It may not have the same range if files that 6.22 had (MemMaker, InterServer, ect) becourse it does not need them. But the DOS files provided have FAT32 Drive Support (Larger Drives than 6.22 and other improvments needed to run 9x) to say it is a cutdown version just becouse some files are missing, is an understatment, to say the least. The missing MS-DOS files can be downloaded from: ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/softlib/mslfiles/olddos.exe
if you want them, this file will also update your VER file. Unless you need these old files, Windows 95/98 runs OK without them! As to Upgrading Windows 98 DOS - It cannot be done - Suppliment it Yes.P.S. Try typing VER at the Win98 DOS Prompt!
(Mine says Windows 98 [Version 4.10.1998])

I did of course mean OLDDOS.EXE updates the SETVER register!
If you would like to see whats in your SETVER Register type WINDOWS\SETVER at the DOS Prompt or SETVER >PRN to pass the list to your printer!
(Mine lists files from MS-DOS 3.31 to 7.10)
