Hi Guys,

I know you've seen this a thousand times, *smiles* but I'm having an issue I need help resolving.

Same old story, want to play an old DOS game.. game supposed to run in DOS + Win 95/98 but errors in both win 98 and DOS with "not enough base memory... 480K needed"..

The game runs dos4gw.exe memory manager and I was wondering how this MM ran with himem and emm386 ? What would be the best conditions to run a dos4gw game from a boot disk? Where should I load the himem and emm386 (if at all?)

Any help or insight would be appreciated!

Thanks
Batty :)

You load himem and emm386 in the config.sys.
You can get help on emm386, himem, by typing help at the dos prompt.
HTH.

To increase conventional mem in DOS

config.sys

device=c:\windows\himem.sys
device=c:\windows\emm386.exe noems
dos=high,umb

autoexec.bat

lh c:\windows\command\mscdexe.exe /D:MSCD001
lh c:\mymouse\mymouse.com

You'll need to change the path to reflect the location of your mouse driver, or anything else that might be in a different folder.
Basically, the first 3 lines of config.sys setup memory management for DOS. Drivers can be loaded 'high' in config.sys by placing

devicehigh=

at the beginning of that line. In autoexec.bat, programs are loaded high by

lh

(and a space) at the beginning of the line.

Check your DOS memory configuration by:

mem/c/p

(the 'help' program came with DOS6 - might not be available with DOS7 etc)

Not sure if a DOS4GW program actually needs memory management, but if you need more conventional DOS mem, you'll need to have a setup something like this.

480K isn't much - should be able to free that up.

Boot with a boot disk. Even when the game is too big for a floppy, you can put a path to the game and memory manager in the Autoexec.bat. You need to have config.sys and autoexec.bat files on the FLOPPY. I would not load either HIMEM.SYS or EMM386.EXE unless the game demands it because they are not needed in DOS and you avoid the possibility of conflicts between memory managers that way. You ought to have close to 600 Mbytes of conventional memory free done this way.

95 CD = other\oldmsdos

98 CD = tools\oldmsdos
