Hi Guys,

I have been given an old elonex celeron 556 laptop with an erased hard drive. I need to install the operating system to xp (of which I have the discs). When I start the computer the system takes me straight to the DOS screen with a C:/> command line. The bootable disc is not recognized on start up.

I have a floppy drive but know very little about dos. any assistance would be much appreciated.

Cheers
Jakey (novice)

If it's starting to a C: prompt then at the very least you have DOS - by definition, an "Operating System"

If you want to install XP, best to ask in that forum, as it has precious little to do with DOS - typically you would boot from the XP CD and install from there. You may need to alter the boot sequence in the CMOS

Well, you must admit, that's the best place to ask - although you will receive much the same response since you've basically posted the exact same question there.

The CD boot is the way to go, but there are alternatives (if necessary)
