I had a 586 with 16 meg ram and running Win95. I gave it to my dad for Xmas as he wanted to learn the basics about computers. Now when I turn it on nothing happens, so today I thought I would reformat the hard disk and reload Windows 95. I must admit I am an absoulute novice at this, but I thought what the hell, give it a go. I typed in format C:/s and it would go on normally until it starts to recover some allocation units, it goes through a couple of those then comes up with: not ready format terminated.

Do a Fdisk first. Do this -- Fdisk /mbr Then run Fdisk again to see if all is OK Now use -- Format C:/u Hope all goes well for you...

Don't bother running FDISK or doing much of anything else with the drive. If format hits bad sectors and then terminates it means that there is physical damage to the disk platters themselves. Get a replacement hard drive.
