You have formatted your hard drive because it said himem.sys was missing (why?????), thus wiping your operating system of the PC. IF you were running DOS then you will need a set of the DOS diskettes and insert DIsk 1 and set your motherboards BIOS boot option to A: first and reinstall as guided by the installtion.
Fdisk allows you to create partitions on your hard drive so that you can load an operating system onto the computer. You may have deleted all partitions from your drive but you also formatted the pc so the error message can come up because of both of these things. Do as I directed above.

Yeah, you need the operating system installation disk(s) or maybe the restore disks that came with the computer. You can't go any farther without them.

"CPU/Ram: n/a"

In fact, this information IS 'available' upon system startup

Just what OS you end up installing is, to a great extent, dependent upon your system specs

"so then i went on the internet and this guy said to do fdisk and i did"

Blindly following instructions you don't really comprehend... well, it leads to situations just like this one

Despite claims to the contrary, posts are not routinely removed from Computing.Net

Sure, but it would be a real clunker that wouldn't run DOS.

Depends on which you're looking for. Older ones like dos, windows 95, 98, ME aren't sold new anymore so you'd need to look on places like ebay or you may find a copy at a used software store, garage sale, etc. XP can be found in retail stores.

Of course it depends also on what your computer can handle. You didn't post your cpu or ram so all I can give is general info.

I don't think the lock command has anything to do unformatting.

If you've accidently formatted the drive and want to get the data back and it's a FAT16 partition you can use the unformat command from earlier versions of dos. Older norton utilities also had an unformat command. There is no easy dos unformat command for FAT32 or NTFS.

If you've locked the drive and need to unlock it, just use the UNLOCK command.

If the bios doesn't support booting from the cdrom, well that's the way it is. Or do you mean you can't get into the cmos/bios setup to change the first boot device to cdrom?

You still haven't posted your cpu or ram, and given the questions you're asking, it'd help to know your motherboard model number. Questions like bios settings are probably best answered in the motherboard manual.

If your bios only shows a: and c: as boot drives I doubt if that computer will even take XP. The option to boot from the cd has been common since P-II's came out. Most half decent P-I's could also. You've probably got a very old P-I or 486. You need at least a P-II to install XP.

But you should be able to download a file to create an XP bootdisk from www.bootdisk.com if you want to try installing XP.

If you check out Yahoo Groups for "DR-DOS" in the "files" section of the two groups, you can download floppy images of different OSs. DRDOS, PCDOS, etc.

If you install the XP on a drive in another computer and then put that drive in yours, the XP won't run. It's fussy about swapped drives. You might be able to copy the XP cd to the hard drive from another computer and then run the installation from your computer. But I still think you'd get an error about it not having the minimum hardware requirements. Yeah, I'd go with 98 on an old one like that must be.

The only thing a bootdisk can do is load cdrom drivers. That gives access to the cdrom. 98 bootdisks all have cdrom support and some 95 disks do as well. Again you can check at www.bootdisk.com and download a file to create the bootdisk.

Which cd are you looking for--98? 95? It wouldn't be practical to email such a large file--400-500 meg, although there was at least one site where you could download it. (Of course that's not the same thing as a bootdisk.) You might be able to find a used copy at a garage sale or someplace like goodwill.

OK, on the 95 cd you really only need the contents of the WIN95 folder in order to install it. On the first version of 95 that comes to about 35 meg. I guess I can email you that.

I'm still on dialup so it'll take a few hours to send it and it'll be later on tonight (U.S. mountain time zone) when I send it.

Post back an email address.

I just tried to send it but the file is too large to send.

The only way I can get this to you is if you give me a mailing address so I can send the entire cd. Trying to email it is just too much trouble.

Or maybe you can find somewhere on the net where you can download the necessary files.

And XP isn't going to run on that computer because it's too old so forget about trying to install it. 95, maybe 98, is the best you're going to be able to do.

You might try a google search for W7XTC. That's part of a 98 product key which seems to be on every internet list of keys. I found that key on two separate PCs I scrapped, one a government computer from either Los Alamos or Sandia national labs.

Anyway, there was a download page for all the 98 cd files which included that key. If that page is still there and you can wade through all the other links you may find it.
