HELP DOS wants to format hard drive

I am trying to resurect my mates computer. windows directory got corrupted scan disk restored it to dir00001 etc. It contains emails and docs that are v.imp Can't get it working. So thought I would install win 3.1 to get use win95 upgrade so needed to install DOS but dos says it is going to wipe hard drive Help me please. Some files too big to back up. Is it possible to install dos without removing contents of hard drive??????
try "deltree windows" and then simply reinstall windows.e mail if you need more assistance.

If I were you, I'd make a quicky boot disk that has...oh say, zip drive support. Boot with it, copy all necessary data to a zip disk. After your friend has scanned all scavenged data and feels safe, wipe the thing and start over.
