My sound card is on board which is VIA VT8233 compliant.
I had tried driverguide.com, goggle search enginee and VIA home page. I still can get any sound under pure DOS environment. The CD came from the motherboad support too many OS such as Windows 95,98,Me,XP,2000, but not DOS and Windows 3.1. The driver download able from VIA offical web site does not contain any DOS sound driver for my board.I know it is possible to have a sound in pure DOS mode, but VIA refuse to do it.
Someone had wrote their driver their own that can partly working under DOS environment. Please inform me if there is any downable third party driver for this.

The first reference gives a hint about dos sound on AC97.The second gives the downloads and How To.Read the lines you have to add in the autoexec.bat to run the drivers and do a little experimenting. You need viaudio.com and viafmstr.com drivers to get dos sound on AC97.Enable Onboard Audio Legacy in the bios if you have it.Good luck.

fungko,
