I have a 20GB hard drive and recently have been getting bad sectors, but everything that would try to read these sectors (scandisk through dos, norton utilities, etc.) would freeze on those sectors. I tried formating it and even formatting froze when it found those bad sectors. Can i still recover the hard drive? If so, can someone please guide me through how to do it? thanks.

Try one of the tools here ;-

You will have to fdisk into smaller partitions but theres no need to format these.Wipe got rid of baad sectors on one of my drives

But how can I F-Disk it when I can't access the drive? I do have access to another computer that I could install this hard drive into, but who can I F-Disk a drive when that computer has Windows XP? (sorry, I'm a n00b).

Some IBM drives begin to appear to be failing as you describe. Low-level formatting the drive using the manufacturer's software will restore the drive to health. This happened to a 30gb drive that came in an IBM computer I own. It started a noisey click, click click as it tried to seek sectors and failed. I downloaded the drive manager software from IBM, installed the latest onboard drive software, low level formatted it, and it has worked fine ever since.

Maybe you should post which manufacturer/model of drive you have.

I suggest you contact the drive's manufacturer and get their procedure for initiating the the built-in low level format and bad sector mapping routines in the drive's firmware.

You may need a bootable DOS floppy and a copy of 'debug.exe', but that can be found fairly easily.

hey, i have exactly the same sized HDD and EXACTLY the same problem. I fixed by using another Hdd with windows and scandisk through that HDD's windows whilst slaving the other HDD. If i scandisked through the bad sector HDD, it would freeze, like u, but if u do it through the other one, it should be ok. also uncheck automatically fix errors and do a thorough test, when it presents u an error, delete it, dun try to fix it, scandisk will freeze.

Hope it helps!

Your best bet is to download the drive diagnostic software from the company that manufactured your hard drive. Its free, and will tell you if the drive is defective, or if the drive simply needs a low level format. I've had two drives with problems, a Seagate and a Maxtor, both had the problems you have described, however both were physically defective and replaced under warranty.

Good luck,

FK

download aefdisk you will get it if you do a search on yahoo.

Put it on a bootdisk any version of windows will do then at command prompt type:

aefdisk /delall /pri:0:0B /formatfat:1

this wipes your drive and creates 1 formatted partition. It doesnt detect bad sectors during format. Once you have done that install windows and run scandisk from windows and that will flag the bad sectors without freezing.

Good luck

John

When your HD starts having bad sectors buy a new one, and save your important data a.s.a.p
Your bad drive could go anytime permanently.
