Comment:

I'm looking for a DOS equivalent of the Unix command GREP. GREP is a text file manipulation tool, but basically the only thing I need to be able to do is search and replace and insert/delete text in a file.

Thanks,
-Michael

A very comprehensive site to check out is the Free Software for DOS site. The site has links to and reviews of all sorts of DOS freeware. The main URL is: http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Lakes/1401/softlib1.htm

and the Unixish DOS section is:
http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Lakes/1401/unix.htm#menu

Also, www.gnu.org has a section listing all of their software:
http://www.gnu.org/software/software.html

You might have to dig to find the DOS ports section. Hope this helps.
Sincerely,
Gary Smith

Or you could use "edit.com" which comes with DOS/9x.

According to my Unix manuals, grep is used to search for patterns not replace them. The Unix utilities used to search and replace is sed. I have a copy of Bordland's DOS Grep but then again it is used to search only.

If you are not afraid of learning, I would suggest AWK. It is a C-like programming language designed to manipulate text files.
Very powerful. Amazing what you can do with it. Drop me a mail if you are interested.
