firstly I am a complete novice...duh !! I bought a few games recently but while installing it keepes telling me that there is not enough conventional memory. I know that I can free up some by moving things (see...complete novice !!)elsewhere...but the language is extremely technical and I'm terrified I'm going to crash the whole thing..so can someone please tell me in idiot mode how to 1) back up the files I need in case something goes wrong (and what to do with the back ups if it does) 2)which items are safe to remove and how to do it? 3)whether to trade in the pc and take up cross-stitch instead ??????
I honestly would be so gratefull if somone would take the time to go into this with me as I don't want to have wasted all this money on games which I can't even install properly. Remember above all....idiot proof directions please !!!

to backup your system files

type

copy /y autoexec.bat autoexec.bak
copy /y config.sys config.bak

to play the games under dos, you can either boot with nothing loaded each time you wish to play the games, or you can edit the system files.

try booting the machine and pressing F8 as soon as "starting windows98" ?? comes up and the machine beeps. this should bring up a menu wher you can select command line only. This will boot the machine with minimal features, but lots of memory.

posting a copy of your autoexec.bat & config.sys files will allow me to tell you what you can do to free up more memory.
or you can email me.
