HellO!

I have issues with my legacy system. I've downloaded a sounddriver and to let that load it needed to load EMM386, did that, but now some of my more "demanding" games crash at startup and i have to reboot the entire machine.

Is this due to lack of memory available? I mean i have 256mb! How to make room for my more demanding applications, and still be able to load EMM386?

Please help

Some of your more "demanding" games may not like FreeDOS.

Also your PC may be too fast for "MS-DOS and compatible" games.............there are programs like Slo'mo which creates an environment for the software to run in the equivelent of 386/486/586 depending on configuration.

Alright! I've read a lot of FreeDOS documentation, but that i've must've missed! Thank you!

Also, it might be true that some games don't like FreeDOS, but i like FreeDOS. I think it's wierd thogh that just some games have problems.

What would you suggest then? Switch to another more compatible dos to play my games on?

I only switch if i have to, because i like FreeDOS much.

Thanks for you replies!

Check if the Bios supports a memory hole at 16 Mb and enable it to play dos games. This should help limit memory size from hardware.Dos games can be played with 4096 Ko of upper memory if EMM386 is used. The crash may originate in the base memory required to play some games. You may need 603 Ko of the 640 Ko of base memory available. If yours is about 580 Ko ,the game would crash. You need to tune dos with drivers that have a small footprint in memory when loaded.ctmouse is one example for the mouse driver.Use the mem command to check the base memory.DR-DOS 7 is still available and can be used for free.It has a setup program that helps tune memory.Shy away from DR-DOS 8 that is basically a dos prompt system.Google search for it if you wish.A lot of support is still available for DR-DOS.

Good luck.

I would suggest you get a 486 or something similar to run pure DOS games. That way you won't have any RAM problems since you could run DOS 6.22.
You should be able to find a decent 486 for 300-500 SEK in any newpaper under private ads.

There was a program available on the Internet named "slowdown", that I have used to get some ol' DOS games running on a faster computer. You may still be able to find it.
