Alfredo,

I already replied to this post earlier (and it was a pretty substantial reply), but apparently the powers that be decided to yank not only my reply, but the whole thread.

I've no idea why your original post and my reply went missing unless somebody posted a reply that included questionable material and instead of deleting the offending post, they just removed the entire thread.

Kinda frustrating.

I really don't feel going to the trouble of repeating my original answer, but I'll e-mail you privately--just give me about thirty minutes.

By the way, I am aware of and wholeheartedly agree with Computing.net's policy of removing posts that contain content (links to warez, serial numbers, or registration codes, for example) that could conceivably get the site into trouble.

My original reply contained no such material and it's fairly frustrating to have posted a reply just to have it disappear.

The following is a re-write of my original reply to Alfredo, recreated from memory as best as I can recall:

Just search the 'net! A quick Google search can provide you with more sources of DOS freeware than you'll know what to do with! (There's plenty of other good search engines--Altavista, Yahoo!, et. al--I just happen to use Google a bit. Everybody's got their personal favorites.)

Just do a search!

I did a quick search on the 'net and within seconds, I'd turned up more freeware for DOS than I could possibly ever download.

Yahoo! can get ya started:
http://dir.yahoo.com/Computers_and_Internet/Software/Freeware/

Also check out Completely Free Software--Windows and DOS free/shareware - tested, reviewed and rated. They've got demos and shareware, but tons of freeware as well:
http://www.completelyfreesoftware.com/

There's also the Download Freeware Web site-- a directory of freeware programs submitted by their developers.

Simtel.net provides an enormous collection of shareware, freeware, and public domain software for MS-DOS and many versions of Windows. They've got a lot of really handy freeware DOS programs, categorized by type with brief descriptions and available for download. Here's their URL:
http://www.simtel.net/

Jumbo has a database full of freeware:
http://www.jumbo.com/

Take a look at Mega 16-bit Freeware--they've got loads of completely free software for Windows 3.x and DOS:
http://www.albedo.net/~arvic/

PC-Tools.net has a less impressive collection of DOS freeware than Simtel, but:
http://www.pc-tools.net/dos/freeware/

There's hundreds--likely thousands--of Web sites from which you can find more legitimate freeware than you could ever find time to sift through. All it takes is a simple search.

Search engines are our friends.

Justin does a good job of maintaining this site. It exists because of his diligence re; warez etc. If things were posted that contravene proticols, hey, we wouldn't be here now would we. There's a lot of help here, and I for one don't want to see it removed because of such postings. He has the right and the duty to keep it "clean", and I would surely miss it if it were to be removed/closed down because of such.

You may have a valid point regarding the topic, but lets remember his (Justin's) role in the matter, and the reason behind this board existing.

Dan, I'm not posting links to warez, serial numbers, or registration codes, or anything else else that could conceivably get the site into trouble!

I am aware of Computing.net's policies and I AGREE with these policies!

I am aware of the rules and I abide by them.

You're not saying anything I don't already know or that hasn't been thoroughly discussed and rehashed ad nauseum. In fact, you're saying the same things I'VE BEEN SAYING.

OK Andrew, we're on the same wavelength. My statement was more_or_less of a general nature, not directed at you, but at others less knowledgable who might visit this topic. The topic name I'm sure would "draw a crowd", some of which would not know that some of those things are illegal.

Dan,

Your point makes sense. Sorry for the apparent overreaction.

Andrew,

Not a problem. I just didn't want you thinking it was a "strike" at you. Now let's get on with helping people. ;>)
