What is your doubt and what do you want to format?

I prefer to format under dos using the format command.

Check it out using the dos help facility.

Good luck - keep us posted.

You will never be allowed by the Windows OS to format the boot partition where you installed Windows(try a windowed dos session with format C: ).Besides that there is basically no difference in the end result.I have seen some old dos systems rewrite the boot sector for compatibility reasons but without a full format.Good luck.

This depends what are you formating Floppy disks or HD?

If Floppy then I would recommend formating with a Dos machine that has Dos ver. 6.22.

Here is why I bought 500 floppy disks from a guy in Oregon one time. When I recieved them they were factory overruns from MicroSoft. They had over tracked the floppies so they could put more infomation on them.

I tried Win95 OS to format them with no luck it just wouldn't format them kept telling me they were all bad. So I broke out my trusty dusty 486 with DOS 6.22 installed on it. I first tried the command Format A:/U this is the Unconditional Format command which didn't work. So I had to use Format a: this did format the disk but it wasn't usable until I then did the Format A:/U then the disks were usable Win95/98 etc. will just spin and spin and spin and tell you the disks are no good HA!

Now for Formating HD's I like DOS again as you can Fdisk them set the partitions then Format from there if it has any errors you will find them PDQ.

I have formated HD's in Windows if they are the secondary drive, I then go right into scandisk to verify the formating process as I am not in awe by Windows Formating capabilites as sited above.

With DOS you are in more control I believe with formating you just have more options at your disposal..

In the end unless you are trying to format your C:> which you'll need a boot disk anyway and you will be using DOS. It would be a matter of what is easier for you to do..

FORMAT is a DOS process. Sometimes when you format from a dos prompt in windows 98 it will tell you that there is an error and terminate when you should be getting the label screen. There was never anything wrong with the format that I could find, but windows just is not comfortable formatting. Suppose one of these programs that runs in the background should interfere with your format for example.
