Hi, Im trying to install Windows V3.1 on my Microsoft Virtual PC.

First of all I start up with a DOS 5 image and then insert the Windows Floppy and type setup.

It takes the floppy and enteres setup.

Problem is it cannot write the WINDOWS file to C.

I think it needs formatting and assigning a drive letter through DOS but im not sure.

Can anyone please help?

I have done this before with a program called dosbox. It worked quite well. Is this what you are using?

You have to create a partition on the harddisk at first, if there is no partition on it.
This can be done with the command:
fdisk

When partition is created successfully, you must reboot the computer and format the harddisk.
This can be done by using the command:
format c:

When finished, you can install the Windows 3.1 onto your harddisk.

Please send a reply, if you solved the problem !!!

Windows 3.1 runs *under* dos, in this case version 5 (6 would have been better).

Surely therefore the partition cannot be too large and it has to be fat16 or maybe fat32.

Suggest googling to check the rules relating to these limitations.

Good Luck - Keep us posted.

He's running Microsoft Virtual PC.

I went to M$ DL page but it didn't work. Cute young Asian girl, though.

Installation went fine! Managed to create a partition and then format it using DOS 6.

Setup installed all the files. Came to a reeboot and everything seemed to have vanished!

I think I need to install DOS onto the Virtual PC if that possible???

At the moment I have to capture a floppy disk image each time I want to run DOS.

It's not only possible, it's mandatory before you can install Win3.1 on VPC (or any "real" PC for that matter). And using "images" won't work either. You have to format the VPC partition and install DOS, just like in the olden days. It can also be done with DOSBox, but sounds like you've already sunk enough into VPC as it is...

Right ok, what I did was start up the virtual pc with a DOS 6 image in the floppy drive.

Then once DOS had loaded I formatted the drive and installed windows v3.1.

Now when I start up the virtual pc it doesnt start with DOS, it just says theres not boot disk.

When I replace the DOS 6 image into the floppy drive and restart, DOS starts and I have to type c:\windows\win to start V3.1.

My question is; why do I have to keep inserting the DOS 6 image?

Shouldnt DOS already be installed now?

No. You have to format the (virtual) drive for DOS, then run setup from the bootdisk (usually disk 1) of the DOS installation disk set (again no images) and completely install DOS. Since backbone of Windows 3.1 is DOS, it has to be installed first. You'll need the full DOS installation disks to do so, a single "image" disk won't work...

DOS 6.22 can be installed full from just an upgrade set, see my comments:
