Formatting erases the hard drive - I'm not sure how you can "re-enter" Windows - it's gone! What were you trying to do?

Need to reinstall - with XP there really isn't much point to using DOS - all the more so if you aren't familiar with it.

btw - fdisk can erase the hard drive as well - leave it alone

Well, if it's anything like every other version of Windows... setup should do it - but remember, there's nothing on your C: drive. You'd have to switch to the CD drive - which is usually D: - and then run setup.

The preferred method is to boot from the CD and run setup from there - the DOS routine is basically for older computers or older versions of Windows that can't boot that way.

Check out the XP forum - folks there would be more familiar with your OS, and any difficulties you may encounter during installation.

Good luck

It would appear you have wiped your hard drive completely? can you confirm?

What O/S do you require installed?

Later Windows versions can boot from CD and if you have a valid partition on your hard drive it will format the partition. Need to set BIOS to boot from CD.

Please post soon......

Palatis- maybe its a language thing. i know format has a very different meaning in some other languages- but with computers it means Erase - like in erase a cassete tape- well theres more to it than that, but nonetheless , thats the end result. If you formatted, in dos or otherwise, its Gooone. kaput. empty . you gotta start over and reinstall.
Sorry.

I'm not trying to be harsh.. but - if you didn't know what you were doing.. why'd you do it?

"Saved to a CD" could mean a lot of things - did you use Ghost, archive it, plain old copy?? Devil's in the details.

I'd suggest that you elaborate on your situation - "NTRDL or something was missing" - maybe you could provide the exact message & details on what you've done here.

The XP forum might be a better choice for you - XP is about as far removed from DOS as Windows can get.

OK- got it- you stuck everything on a CD , formated , and now you want to put it back- well , i'd say use an XP boot disk but i dont know what kind theyve got. Jboy is absolutely right when he says XP is completely removed from Dos- im replying only 'cuz ive got a friend who did the same thing once too often -now he cant ever reinstall XP- apparanrtly hes gotta buy a new copy. X{P is *not* the kind of OS you want to be doing this with- furthermore it doesnt really need occasional formating.
for future reference, maybe?
Meanwhile, do try your question in the XP forum.

i just took another look at your post and something jumped out at me "format in dos"
XP is an "NT" based system- you cant format in dos and have a usable harddrive!
Reinstall XP (it will format the correct file structure automatically) and youll be able to copy your files back-.

Just to add that XP is on a bootable CD and includes a copy of Partition Magic, therefore if you have set your BIOS to boot from CD drive as first device, it will install from the CD. Just a note you can format FAT32 with a Win98 boot disk ready for W2K and XP but not NTFS. If you are in the position of having an unbootable CD BIOS then you will need to make the SIX boot floppies, look on the MS site. or search your CD. XP forum would be a better place to post.........
