try doing a clean boot by pressing F5 when the "starting ms-dos" etc message comes up. This should stop the loading of any drivers and tsr etc and so you should then have enough resources available

Boot off of just about any type of boot disk and type:

sys c:

then you'll be right where you would've started with the /s format.

I tried [sys c:] and still get the message "missing operating system" I also tried to setup my sd rom from the A DRIVE without success. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If I bought ms dos 5.0 or 6.22, would that help in any way?? The system is a 486/66mhz

The error message "No operating system" means just that - no operating stystem. Can't start something if it ain't there.

Leave the boot floppy in the floppy drive, start the machine, at the A:\> type SYS C:

Use a boot/setup/startup disk of the same version of the operating system you intend to install. Mix and match versions at your own peril.

I have a similar problem with my recently acquired second hand laptop (a 486 SLC with 4 MB of RAM and 1.2 GB of hard-drive)

I got a complete MS-DOS 6.22 set from Kewlone and, despite their excellent help page, this is what happened:

I formatted the C drive and, initially, got
this report:
a)1,356,070,912 bytes total disk space
b) " " available on disk
c) 32,768 bytes in each allocation unit
d) 41,384 alloc. units available on disk
e) Volume Serial Number is 3428-0901.

Next, I managed to install DOS 6.22 (at least, that's what my screen reported)

Next, I tried a DIR listing; it did not work!

Then, I formatted the C drive again.

Now, I get the following report for categories a-e (as above):

a)528,171,008
b)527,958,016
c)8,192
d)64,448
e)290C-0BDE

Finally, when I try to use the reboot-disk,
this message pops up on the screen:

"Invalid media type reading drive C"

So, I seem to have lost half of my C drive and I cant get into the system.

Please, any one able to help??

when it says invalid media type, it means that there is no system running on your drive. wither you F-DISKED IT or you clean formated it. now you have to get a windows startup disk, and type format/s c:

that should work for ya!

Tushar

Thanks for responding.

Typing "format/s c:" does not seem to work.

FDISK resulted in the following:

Partition = C:1
Status = A
Type = PRI DOS
Volume Label = MS-DOS_6
Mbytes = 504
System = FAT 16
Usage = 100%

To recap: I seem to have lost half of the original capacity of my C drive, and I cant manage to install DOS 6.22 on the remaining half.

Need some help. Skee
