Hi I have a problem regarding Dos. I accidently deleted an "exe" file which was needed to run any applications. I was told reformating my computer will help. So I created a boot disk from MS-Dos, copying only sys A:(this disk was bootable btw.). I tried copying other files but none were found on my comp. I continued on to reformat my computer with my boot disk. A DOS error message said that my "CDROM\CDROMDRV.SYS" file was missing...which I suppose? relates to CONFIG.SYS files.
My computer with this problem is in the middle of reformating itself and I have no idea how I can create a disk with the proper files to continue on reformating my computer such that it is able to run with out error. Your help and suggestions are appreciated. Thanks. Billy.

The first question I have is if you are running Windows 98 why are you trying to install DOS from a DOS boot floppy. You should use the Windows 98 boot floppy and reinstall Windows 98, or use a DOS boot floppy with valid CDRom drivers and start the Windows 98 install from the Windows 98 CD.

There is no "exe file which was needed to run any applications". There is a "com" file; "command.com" which is the command interpreter (or kernal if you will) that is required for DOS to run. The "minimum" number of files required to be installed for DOS to run is three; io.sys, msdos.sys (both hidden) and command.com. To transfer over those files "correctly" look for sys.com on your boot floppy. If it is there type "sys c:". That will install the files properly to your hard drive. Alternatively, you can format using the "/s" option, which will automatically transfer those files after the format is complete. Also, to me there is no doubt that your "CDROMDRV.SYS" is a DOS based CDRom driver. This will not get your installation of Windows 98 working correctly unless the DOS boot disk was made from Windows 98.

Download a Windows 98SE OEM boot disk, this is a self extracting image executed on win9x/NT PC, .from
http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

Boot your PC with this and undertake a reinstall of W9x from CD into the same directory which is usually C:\WINDOWS, this will overwrite system files but leave installed software intactus............

Good luck
